My guest is American composer and pianist Mizzy Mazzoli. Missy writes music for pretty much every medium under the sun: opera, orchestra, chamber ensemble, film, television, and for her own band, Victoire. Mazzoli often centres her work on strong female characters. A co-founder of Luna Composition Lab, a mentorship program that focuses on developing the next generation of women, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming composers, she is outspoken about the position of women in contemporary classical composition. His impact on the global new music community went far beyond the borders of his native Netherlands and had a particularly significant impact on many American composers, including Derek Bermel who, over a decade ago, wrote about his studies with Andriessen for NewMusicBox.
