👍🏼👏
As many of us educators are preparing to welcome our students back to school tomorrow or early next week, I would guess that I’m not the only one letting my mind wander to thoughts of everything I hope to accomplish this year...and the harsh reality that there’s absolutely no way that I’ll accomplish everything on that list. So what should I focus on?
This summer I read the book ‘I Wish my Teacher Knew’ by Kyle Schwartz. Though much of it spoke to me and tugged at my heart, I wanted to share a picture of one simple paragraph.
Our classrooms. Our grade levels. Our teams, clubs, and committees. Our teaching staff. Our support staff. Our administration. Our school as a whole. Every one of these is a community. And communities are strengthened when we give members the opportunities to develop their best selves; when we give members a safe space in which to try, to fail, and to try again; when we have the genuine belief that every member has something to contribute in his or her own way. With these principles we move beyond the labels of ‘student’ and ‘teacher’ and instead we build individual character in each and every one of us.
If there’s one goal that we have to set above the rest, let it be that. Let’s walk out of our schools in June 2019 knowing that we made our students feel safe enough to start to figure out who they are and who they hope to be.
Wishing everyone a successful 2018-2019 school year. Good luck!
Wild thought isn’t it?

I know we've been over saturated with articles about '13 Reasons Why' but I'm thankful that I was asked to contribute my opinion to this piece.
Now let's shift the focus away from the 'should we or shouldn't we watch it?' conversation and let's become solution focused. We have to help individuals struggling with depression and thoughts of su***de understand that su***de is not a solution. We have to help them find hope.
Cultivating hope comes with learning how to shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. It doesn’t necessarily come from repeating positive statements in your mind convinced that one day you’ll believe them. It comes from opening your mind to the idea even though you might not feel capable of fighting your demons today, who knows what you’ll feel capable of doing tomorrow. This is not the same things as cultivating optimism. Optimism is a state of mind; hope is the feeling that can lead you there.

Parents, It's Time To Stop Undermining Our Kids' Teachers We are doing a huge disservice to our kids. We are raising a generation of children who are going to be incapable of succeeding in the modern era. They are being taught to be egocentric and to give up, often before even trying.

Though I can't take credit for finding this article on my own, it would be silly of me not to share it. I love the idea of this 'No Rescue Policy' for parents. Please take 5 minutes to read this very short article that can start the conversation about how to foster independence In children.
As the second point says, "remember that parental love should be more about doing things WITH your children rather than doing things FOR your children."
