I woke up on July 9th at 8:00 am, which was later than usual for me since I typically wake up between 6:30 and 7:00 am. I started my morning as usual: I made a cup of coffee and took my morning meds. If my husband wasn't in front of the TV first thing in the morning, it usually meant he was out smoking his morning ci******es in the garage. I sat at the counter, drinking my coffee and scrolling through Facebook, when I remembered my upcoming appointment with the endocrinologist this Friday. I texted my husband to ask when we should call the cab service for the ride, since we don't drive. He didn't reply, and I assumed he was scrolling through YouTube videos as usual.

After about 20 minutes, I started to wonder why he hadn't come back inside yet. Messenger showed that he hadn't seen my message. I went to the front door to check if he was in the garage. I immediately noticed the front door was still locked, suggesting he wasn't outside since he would have left it unlocked. I thought maybe he had fallen asleep somewhere else and started searching every room of the house, checking our bed, the downstairs sofa, the upstairs sofa, and all the kids' rooms, thinking he might have gone to snuggle with them.

At this point, I started to panic because he wasn't in any of those places. I thought maybe he had gone to the store early in the morning, as he sometimes did to surprise us with breakfast. I unlocked the front door and saw that the garage door was still closed. Usually, when he smoked, he left it wide open to air out the space. I tried to turn the handle and noticed it was locked. I walked away and looked around the corner toward the back of the house, but he wasn't in the backyard. I called his name but got no answer. Something told me I needed to get into the garage, so I pushed my hand through the plexiglass at the top of the window to unlock it.

Inside, I found my husband sitting in a chair. At first glance, it looked like he had just fallen asleep. I yelled from across the room, "Are you serious? Did you sleep out here all night?" My husband could literally fall asleep anywhere, even standing up if he was tired enough. As I got closer to shake him, I noticed blood coming out of his nose and saw blood down the front of his shirt. I thought maybe he had gotten sick or had some other medical issue. I ran inside to get my phone to call for help. When I returned to the garage, I saw the gun in his lap and the bullet hole in his head. I continued to hold on to hope, thinking maybe he had just grazed himself and could be helped.

I called the police, who arrived within a few minutes. I paced back and forth outside the garage, hoping and praying he'd be alright. Then I heard one of the officers say that the morgue was on its way, and I knew it was too late. They said he had already been dead for at least two to three hours. My husband was only 51 and had suffered from depression all his life. He left several su***de notes: one for his friends at work, one for the children, and the last one for me. In the letter, he wrote how he had been sad for a very long time and felt overwhelmed by the huge debt, the repairs needed on the house, the bills, my health problems, the stress of homeschooling the kids, and the pressures of his job. It was all too much for him, and he couldn't take the pain anymore. He hoped his sacrifice would get his family the help they needed.

Now, I'm forced to raise our youngest six on my own with no income. Due to my health problems, I can't hold down a job and will be forced to rely on government assistance for the rest of my life. My husband and I had been together for almost 34 years. He was truly my soulmate. We brought 10 beautiful children into this world, six of whom are still under 18. Our youngest is a special needs child with autism. I'm trying my best to keep my head above water for them, but my heart is crushed forever.
