Added a few more books to the library. The ordnance info in the two Eastern European books is great, and the smaller Osprey book gives some pretty good into information into the 2008 war that I needed.

The internet is great, but books are awesome.

After almost a year and a half of Federal investigation, I have finally received the Soviet DP-2 classroom training aid that was supposed to arrive back in February of 2022.

The device is a harmless circuit diagram that shows how the 1950s Geiger counter works. It can also be plugged into a wall outlet to make clicking sounds and show simulated readings to illustrate how the device would work under real circumstances.

They were less than gentle with it and it’s going to be a while getting it to work again. :(

This item was seized along with an inert YaRM river mine. US Homeland Security returned the upper part of the mine to me after questioning me and conducting an investigation (the lower half of the mine was destroyed along with Dnepro airport in March 2022).

I was found to have broken no law, and after being investigated, paying a fee, and going through s lengthy process, I got my stuff back. To those who say ‘you shouldn’t worry about the government if you don’t have anything to hide’, I say that the loss of peace of mind (if not moments of actual fear) and financial loss don’t justify giving the government unrestrained power. We have a 4th amendment for a reason.

That being said, all of the agents I spoke with were polite and professional.

I guess the moral of the story is that everyone should learn how to read the mind of the government in order to avoid trouble. I was flagged because I was dealing with Russia and Ukraine (which I had done for 20+ years now) and once the war began, the government assumed I was a Russian arms dealer or a trainer of Russian sleeper cells. Yeah, it’s stupid, but they thought that. There are many other details that make this case really absurd (like the fact that it I had worked with Homeland Security before on CBRN equipment history, so the should have known who I was and what I did).

To my collector friends… be careful and know that big brother really is watching…

Three new Soviet mortar manuals arrived today. Three more to add to my scan list so I can enable people to download them for free.

The oldest is in the center (from 1947), while the others are from 1983 (82mm) and 1980 (120mm).

They cover mostly components and maintenance, though some ammo and positioning is covered.
