I am a butterfly/moth whisperer! I saved so many moths the other day, I think these Tiger Swallowtails came to thank me! There were 8 of them, dancing a beautiful ballet, at the top of our driveway when we got home the other day.

Lauren Hall, a 13-year-old with dyslexia from Steubenville, Ohio, turned her school-required science project into an eye-opening study, challenging teachers to read 'dyslexic' text; her findings showcased the difficulties dyslexic students face daily. Peanuts can be found in many foods under alternate names. Some of these names include:
▫️ arachidic acid
▫️ arachis oil
▫️ goober nuts
▫️ ground nuts
▫️ peanut oil
▫️ peanut butter
▫️ hydrolyzed plant protein
▫️ hydrolyzed protein
▫️ hydrolyzed vegetable protein
▫️ mandelona nuts
▫️ cacaheuta
▫️ Earth nuts
▫️ mani
▫️ Nu-Nuts
▫️ ontjom or onchom (Indonesia)
▫️ Valencias (Valencia is a variety of the peanut plant.)
▫️ kernel paste
▫️ mandelonas

Spotting peanuts in non-food items is quite a challenge due to the many alternate names that manufacturers use on ingredient labels.

Here's a list of non-food items that can possibly contain peanuts:
▫️ Cat litter (peanut shells)
▫️ Stuffing for beanbags or stuffed animals (birdseed stuffing can contain peanuts)
▫️ Wallboard
▫️ Artificial fireplace logs (ground-up peanut and tree nut shells)
▫️ Livestock feed
▫️ Axle grease
▫️ Birdseed
▫️ Bleach (only applies to color-safe bleach varieties, not chlorine-based bleach)
▫️ Detergent
▫️ Explosives
▫️ Face creams (arachis hypogaea)
▫️ Metal polish
▫️ Medicine
▫️ Dog food (peanut butter)
▫️ Paint
▫️ Shampoo (arachis hypogaea)
▫️ Shaving cream (arachis hypogaea)
▫️ Soap (arachis hypogaea)

To stay safe, read ALL ingredient labels, stay alert, and whenever in doubt, call the manufacturer.

While food labeling laws may be getting stricter, understanding what foods are safe to eat isn't as simple as it seems.

Why?

Because some food labels — like the ‘May Contain’ label — can actually be dangerous for individuals with food allergies!

The ‘May Contain’ label is not only vague and confusing, but it can also pose significant dangers to people with allergies.

Here's how.

The ‘May Contain’ label is not required by law. It is a voluntary label.

So, why exactly is it then mentioned on food products?

Food manufacturers add the blanket statement — May Contain — to protect themselves in case someone has an allergic reaction to one of their products.

The label simply means that while the labeled product isn’t supposed to contain the allergen, the manufacturer can’t be sure it doesn’t. They can’t be sure there hasn’t been cross-contact during preparation.

Foods with the ‘May Contain’ label might not contain any allergens at all, but there is also a chance they do.

So you should always take this label seriously.

Yes, it is possible that you might have come into contact with a product that ‘May Contain’ an allergen without suffering an allergic reaction in the past. But you could buy the same product again and have an allergic reaction.

We understand this can be really frustrating and sometimes even life-threatening, which is why it's best to simply avoid these products altogether.

Do you avoid products with ‘May Contain' labeling?

So many people have told us that they're afraid to use their epinephrine auto-injector (or their child is afraid of it). But others who have used it during an anaphylactic reaction describe a feeling of "instant relief."
We've heard anaphylaxis explained in so many different ways (in terms of how the body feels). Someone recently described it as the feeling of being held underwater, and the epinephrine injection is the feeling when you're brought to the surface and take a big breath of air.

How would you describe it? Both the anaphylaxis and the epinephrine.

Some of my recent thoughts, my mom calls "Tyler"-isms:

@ the Delaware County Fair Fire Safety Booth:
Tyler: "Oooooh, what are those?"
Fire Rep: "It's a miniature Fire Uniform, we use for display, because the full.size ones are heavy and hot, so we have these small ones to show what they're like. And that's a costume, but we don't wear them anymore due to heat and germs."
Tyler: "well, what if you had a mannequin for them, then nobody has to get too hot and you can display them all the time?"
All adults: 🤯
Fire Rep: "I'm gonna bring that up to the boss and see if we can do that! Thanks!"

@ the Delaware County Fair "HoneyDrunk' Bee Booth:
Tyler: "You could make a honeycomb made of glass, so you can see inside it, so you can see the larva, and maybe find the queen easier, because she could be inside or in between the combs and we wouldn't know it..."

On an evening walk:
Tyler: "Did you know zombies really do exist? It's us! Because we can all be a little brain dead at times!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
