A letter from Lauren

This past year has been the biggest drop in sales for my business in our 12.5 years of The Burlap Bag. Even through the pandemic. And I’m hearing the exact same story from most of my friends who run small businesses. Retail & wholesale sales are extremely down.

We all have similar stories - We’re coming out with great new products regularly! Doing all the things social media wants us to! Spending money on advertising! Keeping our customers happy! Make an even better quality product! Maybe somehow make it cheaper! etc.

We can come up with all the reasons it’s slow - the economy, amazon, covid, the algorithm, etc.

We’re having to: let go of amazing employees, move to smaller studios, or go find other jobs.

To say it’s a giant bummer is a huge understatement.

I’ve just been wallowing in this sadness (for me, but also all my friends & their families.) And brainstorming, HOW DO I FIX THIS?! (yes, I’m trying to fix everyone’s problems, always, ha!)

Where does change start? With me.

A 10% change in where I spend my $$. It could immediately help other small businesses. No, it doesn’t solve things. But it DOES make a difference. I want my money to be supporting others like me as much as I can.

Some initial ideas:
-Going to a local coffee shop once a week instead of Starbucks.
-Buying a small brand hot sauce instead of Sriracha at my next grocery run.
-Committing that my next piece of clothing will be from a small shop and NOT fast fashion.
-Even if I need to buy on Amazon (hey, I get it, prime shipping is the best), find a small business to buy from on there!
-Hit up a craft fair and stock up on bday gifts there instead of Target once a season.

It doesn’t have to be a full spending change - it IS generally more expensive to shop small.
For April, I’m committing to shop small 10% more than I already do.

4,700-year-old ball of yarn discovered near Lake Bienne in Lüscherz, Switzerland, dated to at least 2700 BC

In the Neolithic period, the development of textiles was a significant leap forward for early societies. While direct evidence like the 4,700-year-old yarn ball is rare, indirect clues have painted a broader picture. Impressions on pottery, discovered at various sites, reveal patterns and techniques of weaving, indicating an established practice. Tools such as spindle whorls and loom weights, essential for spinning and weaving, have been unearthed as well.

In some exceptional cases, actual cloth fragments have been found, often preserved in unique conditions like bogs that prevent decomposition. Additionally, Neolithic art and iconography occasionally depict clothing and textile patterns.
