Today, as the entire nation recalls the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and pays tribute to them, IIT Gandhinagar also celebrated the 73rd Independence Day with great fervor. The celebrations began with flag hoisting by Professor Amit Prashant, Officiating Director, IITGN, followed by his address to the IITGN community. Later, the Dean's list felicitation program was held to felicitate the students who have achieved academic excellence. The day also witnessed some marvelous performances by the students and community members during the cultural program. Here are some glimpses from the celebration.

The IIT Gandhinagar fraternity is glad to share with you all that Professor Jaichander Swaminathan, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar has been selected as the 2019 International Desalination Association (IDA) fellow. The IDA Fellowship is one of the most prestigious awards of the industry. Its purpose is to promote greater interaction and sharing of knowledge, technologies, and processes in the desalination and water reuse industry.

Hearty congratulations to Professor Swaminathan for his achievement.

Throwback Thursday: Jashn 4.0
A major throwback from the Prom Night held as a part of Jashn 4.0 at IIT Gandhinagar during 2nd-5th January 2015. The fourth edition of the intra-college cultural festival featured some more activities like Live Angry Birds, Mehfil-e-Jashn, Art Expo and others in the list.

IIT Gandhinagar hosted a preliminary round of Inter School Quiz on Earthquake Tips on 24th November 2018 for National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE), IIT Kanpur.
The team from Smt. Sandraben Shroff Gnyan Dham School-Official, Vapi won the preliminary round, followed by Aditya Birla Public School, Bharuch, and Maharaja Agrasen Vidyalaya, Ahmedabad as first and second runner-up. The final round of the quiz will be conducted at IIT Kanpur on February 7, 2019.

Throwback Thursday: Memories from IGNITE 1.0
Sharing a throwback memory from IIT Gandhinagar's first intra-college science and technology fair, Ignite 1.0, held in February 2015. Around fifty students had showcased their products during IGNITE 1.0.

IIT Gandhinagar Electrical Engineering discipline is pleased to host three lectures by distinguished visitors in the broad area of the "Exotic applications of Photonics in the 21st century".

Following are the summaries and the details of the three lectures:

1. Design and Optimization of Silicon Nanophotonic Devices
Prof B M Azizur Rahman, Professor of Photonics, City University, London, UK (Fellow of the Optical Society of America, IEEE, SPIE)
Brief description: As optical technology has reached maturity, the associated devices have themselves become more complex. Our recent research focus has been on the design and optimization of silicon nanophotonic devices. When the dimensions of an optical waveguide are much smaller than the operating wavelength, unique materials and structural dependent properties can be exploited and these recently have been receiving much attention. The high index contrast of silicon allows light confinement in submicron size waveguides, along with the creation of very compact bends, to allow increased functionality of photonic integrated circuits.

2. Optical fiber sensors for industrial applications
Prof Kenneth Grattan, George Daniels Professor of Scientific Instrumentation, City University, London, UK (Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Institute of Physics)
Brief description: Optical fibre sensors have been reported now for over three decades, but as yet their use in industry has been limited. This has however accelerated in recent years due to intensive development work and a number of applications being identified where optical fibre techniques offer particularly attractive solutions to problems from industry. This talk will provide an overview of techniques for optical fibre-based sensing and discuss a number of areas where the authors have been active, working with industry, to create new solutions to key measurement problems.

3. Legacy and Specialty Optical Fibers for Communication and Exotic Applications
Prof Bishnu Pal, Professor of Physics, Bennett University, Greater Noida (Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), Fellow of SPIE, Distinguished Honorary Foreign Member of Royal Norwegian Academy of Science (DKNVS, Norway), Member Board of Directors of OSA (USA, 2009-11)
Brief description: In this talk I would try to present evolution of fiber designs to meet the growing demand of a variety of optical fibers for specialty applications including communication. Starting with legacy fibers used for present day telecommunication and Internet traffic, depending on time, we will discuss fibers for DWDM, dispersion compensation, nonlinear optics, mid-IR photonics, and THz photonics along with our own research on these topics.
