Welcome new staff member, Laura Smith!
Laura joined the Hillside community in the summer of 2024 as an administrative assistant. Although she has resided in other places she was raised in LaGrange and considers it home. Both of her parents are local educators and she saw the impact first hand that could be made by a special teacher. She began her own path into education when she was just 14 assisting and the teaching dance classes at LaFayette Society of Performing Arts. She holds a Bachelors of Art in Graphic Design from LaGrange College and worked as a freelance graphic designer from 2010-2024 doing marketing work for Mountville Mills, LaGrange Daily News, Techniques School of Dance and National History Day Georgia.
Knowing she wanted to be in the classroom, she completed her Masters of Teaching in Art Education in the fall of 2014. She taught Art at Kemp Elementary School in Cobb County from January 2018- May 2023 and has been a board member of the Georgia Art Educators Association since Fall of 2023. She and her family moved closer to home during the summer of 2023. In her free time, she enjoys cooking for her family and friends, traveling with her husband and daughter, and reading.

A CHILD'S SUMMER ASSIGNMENT FOR SUCCESS: Be a child. Have fun, go outside, be bored, run around until you're exhausted, goof off, draw stuff, build Legos, get muddy, scrape your knees, read lots of paper books, and think nothing of screens or school!
We love this advice from William Doyle, the co-author of Let the Children Play! Let's embrace it this summer!
Day 3 of Animal camp was all about Reptiles. The students observed and fed Bubbles, the water turtle, and got to interact with Herman, the land turtle. They painted bubble wrap to make scales for a snake and played a game of animal charades. Today we are learning about Amphibians!
On day 2 of Animal camp students dissected an owl pellet and built and painted birdhouses. Tomorrow is learning all about reptiles.
Day 1 of Animal camp was a fun time of making furry mammals and reading the book Stellaluna. It's about a baby bat who lost its way and for a while lived with birds, but eventually got back to it's worried mother. We are looking forward to tomorrow's study about birds.
These days kids are not playing outdoors enough! Here is a week of exploring nature, water play, and sensory exposure. We will be making mud pies, creating art with sticks and stones, watching bugs, and allowing our imaginations to run wild. We will have water tables and sensory bins to explore as well. This camp is for children to build relationship skills with friends all while being in the sensory playground called the great outdoors. Playing in nature will be the theme of this camp and your children will not want to miss this one!
