Otis the lesser anteater shows off his skills at a recent program with Jessi. He's even kind enough to hold his own treat bowl while Jessi explains how he defends himself against predators.
Otis has been at Animal Wonders for just over a year, and it's so fun seeing how much confidence he's gained. The best part is watching him enjoy the variety of locations we get to travel to to visit with our audiences.
If you looked up the definition of "Lounge" it would simply show this picture of Pippin the skunk. 🦨💕
Skunk bathtime!
While Pippin doesn't truly enjoy his baths, he is such a gentleman that he tolerates the process with stoicism.
Sunny the red crested turaco is an absolutely stunning beauty. She's had a busy summer season, training with her human trainer, Emily. Emily's goal was to have Sunny calm and comfortable traveling to programs and meeting audiences. Sunny and Emily have successfully visited three camp groups this summer and future visiting schools this coming fall is looking very promising! It's so exciting to see the progress Sunny and Emily have made!
Animal Wonders was hit with high winds and a big lightning storm last night. Our power is out, but thankfully, no animals or structures were harmed and our backup generator is keeping us afloat. While it's a bit wet from the downpour (thankful for the rain!), summer camps are scheduled as normal. We're hoping all of our friends and neighbors are safe and power is restored soon. Thank you emergency workers for all of your help during this time! We have a wonderful community!
KrissKross the hedgehog shows off her feeties during her regularly scheduled pedicure session.
Baby Rocky raccoon is through the first round of treatments and he's doing great! He's still in quarantine, but we can now get him outside in designated areas to explore and get some daily exercise in.
Look who we unearthed! Slick and Flash, the tiger salamanders, have moved in together, and both buried themselves into the cool, shady soil under the water dish. We're hoping Slick has a good influence on the youngster. We don't know how old Slick is, but he came in as an adult and has been at Animal Wonders for over a decade. Flash is wary of new food items, and Slick eats everything that moves. Since moving into Slick's burrow, we've seen Flash's interest in food increase, and we have our fingers crossed that watching Slick enjoying a variety of meals is just what is needed to bring Flash out of his shell.
Slick has terminal cancer, but it's slow growing. We first noticed a lump on his back 2 years ago, and a smaller one appeared on his lip last year. We don't know how much longer we have with our wonderfully wet friend, but we're happy to be able to give him a safe and comfortable home for as long as he's here.
We received an unfortunate call about an orphaned baby raccoon whose mother had been hit by a car. The finder took the baby home and when they learned it was illegal to keep him, they called Animal Wonders. Rocky is young enough to still need milk and raccoons are notorious for the variety of parasites and diseases they can carry (roundworm, ticks, fleas, canine distemper, etc). So, he is receiving all of the necessary treatments and medications to get him healed up and clean. He'll be in quarantine until he's no longer a risk for infecting others. This process sounds so simple, but the daily duties could fill a person's whole schedule.
Raising surprise baby raccoon wasn't something we planned for during our first week of summer camps, but here we are! Please give Rocky a warm welcome! We could use help with his medical costs, so if you'd like to donate, you can use the link below.

2024 Summer camps have begun!
We’re excited to share that we recently received a $500 grant from our local Walmart on Brooks St. to help with our community summer camps- a big thank you to Walmart and their Spark Good Local Grant program!
Welcome home, Stevie!
Stevie is a Herrmann's tortoise who came to Animal Wonders when her previous owners had big life changes that made it too difficult to continue to provide the care she needs. Stevie is about 5 years old, and we're just getting to know her, but we have learned that she has a huge appreciation for dandelions!
Say cheese! 📸
Seraphina ❤️
If you don't do the dive, you won't get all the dirty details.
Flash, the tiger salamander, is using gular pumping to breathe here.
Fish use buccal pumping to breathe. Reptiles and tuataras can use buccal pumping if they want to. Crocodiles, birds, and mammals... do it differently.

Atlas is always ready to practice and learn new things. Here he is with Mariah, who has been working with him on waiting patiently. Like most foxes, Atlas is very food motivated and will quickly snap up any delicious treats within reach. Mariah has taught Atlas that waiting will result in a bigger and better treat, and Atlas is eager to cooperate
Thank you for having us out to Butte, MT to share the animals!
Thank you for making the world a better place!!! We're honored to be awarded a grant that will help us save lives, provide sanctuary to those in need, and spread joy and education with our communities.
New rescue! This bearded dragon was relinquished to Animal Control as an unwanted pet, waited patiently in foster care for a new home, and eventually landed at Animal Wonders yesterday. They're all settled into a temporary space for quarantine, and we can't wait to get to know them better.
We're sending out a big thanks to all of the foster homes who provide safety to animals who are in transition. Being able to offer sanctuary to those in need is only possible because of the support we get from our community. Thank you for allowing us to do this work!
Dozer, the screaming hairy armadillo, is a small guy but he sure can make big things happen! When he gets to work, his expert digging techniques can move mountains (figuratively).
We're feeling a lot like Dozer today. Animal Wonders is a small organization, but our work moves mountains. To the animals who call this little oasis in the middle of a Montana forest home, we are their entire world! We give them safety, comfort, joy, and excitement. We've moved mountains to give them a second chance at a wonderful life.
You know the words well, "we can't do this work without you", and it's so TRUE! Thank you for all of your support!!
Zeema isn't very good at "hiding" her excitement! We're just $15 from hitting our fundraising goal!
We receive such generous support from so many people 🧡 From general funding for organization stablility, to emergency rescue situations, to improvement projects, you always come through! Thank you for making Animal Wonders a force for good!!

It doesn't get better than this! Watching an animal heal and begin to thrive is such a privilege. Thank you for allowing us to give them all of the care and safety they need to get a second chance at life! Raisin, the leopard gecko, is a shining example ✨️
Our biggest fundraiser is just around the corner, and we're going to need your help to make it a success. Missoula Gives is a local event that's held online, and since our community and supporters are both local and online, we're asking for you to jump into the fun of fundraising for the animals!
Unfortunately, we're faced with increasing costs to meet the needs of the animals in our care and those that will need rescue and sanctuary in the next year. Food and essential medical treatment prices have gone up, and we're working extra hard to make up the difference so we can continue to see recovery stories like Raisin's. We're also hoping to make some much needed improvements to the homes of a few of the animals. We need your help to make it happen!

Kylie has been an incredible asset to our team for almost 2 years now. She started as a volunteer and soon after applied for our Educator Internship. During her internship, she combined her natural skills with new learned skills and became such a wonderful help that our Wildlife Educators would often ask to have her join them for programs. Kylie then moved on to become our Behavior Intern, where she delved into animal enrichment and training. While she honed her training skills, practicing on a variety of species and individuals, her innate observation skills and ability to understand animals was obvious. Knowing she is an absolute gem and we're so lucky to have her part of our team, Kylie is now fully one of our Wildlife Educators! If you're lucky enough to see her sharing the animal ambassadors in person, you'll know exactly why we're so excited to have her on our team.
Kylie was nominated for Outstanding Student Volunteer at the University of Montana shortly before joining our staff and we think she deserves a whole lot of appreciation for the generosity of her time and the dedication to building and strengthening the misson of our organization. We want to give her all the recognition she has clearly earned, especially since it's her birthday today!
Wildlife Educator, Callie, holds a special place in her heart for reptiles, especially lizards. Callie has really enjoyed caring for Pearl, the Colombian black and white tegu, with all of her special needs.
Pearl has been showing signs of slowing down this last year, and at 17 years old, she's exceeded the normal age range for her species. We've cared for Pearl for over 16 years, and in that time, she went from a feisty, spicy youngster to a calm, relaxed senior. Callie has been helping Pearl with her medical care, and, along with the rest of our animal care team, Pearl is receiving all the love and comfort there is to offer.
A very sweet Earth Day video featuring our new beaver boy, Fenn! Thank you Northern Colorado Wildlife Center for caring for Fenn and giving him a second chance at life!
