One of the common reasons that candidates fail the IELTS exam is that they believe that they should give a detailed answer to each question, and they think that the IELTS is an academic test. It is not.

This is just an exam to determine your level of proficiency in English. In parts 1 and 3, you can easily be asked such questions, to which, in principle, it is almost impossible to give a detailed answer. A huge mistake would be to try to give a complete answer when you have nothing to say. In this case, your language becomes incoherent, and as a result, you are confused. All that is required of you is to say that you do not know, explain why and wait for the next question. With practice, you'll get comfortable saying 'no.

EXAMPLE:
Examiner: What color is your room painted in and why did you choose it?

Student: My room is painted blue. I do not know what to say. I never thought about it. I assume that because blue is my favorite color.
