Last night, The Project (Australian program) brought up the issue of mobile phones in the classroom. It case studied a high school that has tried to handle the problem of social distraction with this technology.
I think that there should never be a blanket ban on the use of technologies in education.
What I believe that it continues to highlight is education's failure to use digital technology effectively in the classroom. It is important that young children LEARN to view digital technology in early childhood education as a tool that is designed for a specific purpose and not just a social device.
As an early childhood educator, you can begin for example by modelling how this can be done with mobile phone. It can be taking a digital photo that can be uploaded to the computer drawing program to be scribbled on.
Or recording a digital story or play as a video for the young children to watch and reflect on later.
These same strategies need to then continue through primary education and secondary education.
