Good Day Everyone,
I've created a new page for my glass efforts - please join me on the next iteration of Spirit Glass to keep updated on the crafting journey (now working on clear glass pieces to refine my work), participate in special events (giveaways), and support helpful resources (like my fundraising efforts for community support programs and tributes to gold star families). Please go here and follow that page https://www.facebook.com/people/Spirit_Glass/100085541333855/
Why the Switch? (read on!)
Every once in a while I've found it necessary to clean up my follower list. Over time, the list gets populated with folks (and/or bots) who aren't terribly interested in my glass work and never engage in posts. The net result is that Facebook's algorithms make it harder and harder for my posts to actually reach the people who like my work. The only solutions to this are: a) pay FB lots of money in advertising or b) clean up the list myself and rely on word of mouth to regrow my lists.
The downside of option B is that Facebook doesn't give me a tool to see and manage all my followers (just about half actually), so I need to occasionally wipe the slate clean and start afresh.
I hope you'll come join me on my new page! Take care and God Bless,
-Peter
Doing a one time tag on those I can see from my list in the hopes that they'll read this post and engage with my work... hope to see you soon :) For those whose path takes them a different direction, thanks for participating in my craft to date - your past support is greatly appreciated.

Hi All - question for you...got a new toy for the workshop - the drill press. Once I figured out how to use is it to drill holes in glass without it cracking (still learning :(, was able to convert one of my smaller rondel pieces into a mighty fine looking jewelry piece. You can check it out here: https://spirit-glass.myshopify.com/collections/pendants/products/art-glass-jewelry-pendant-hot-glass-multi-color-mothers-day-gift
I'd like some feedback on pricing for this kind of piece - its not relying on fusing, which is fairly straight forward, but requires an actual hot shop to blend the colors and create feelings of movement in the piece, plus additional time with the drill and lots of prayers to open up a hole in the glass for jewelry additions without things splitting and ruining the piece completely.
What price would you pay if you were in a handmade store and came across a coloring / patterning that you really liked? ($15, $25, $30, $35, $40, $45, $50, more?)

A Glassy Opportunity
So, back in 2013, I had picked up a small 15x9 inch kiln from a nice lady in Warner, NH, trading a couple hundred bucks and a newly made vase for it. I've used it throughout my glasswork over the years and its been a reliably solid piece of equipment. The downside has been that I was limited to how many pieces I could make in a day and I'd have to tip over taller vases because they wouldn't fit standing in the kiln (which would in turn put a dent in the vase from lying on its side - sigh....).
Now that I'm making pieces a bit larger, nicer and faster, I'd very much like the opportunity to expand my craft and could use some help. The above kiln is almost three times higher (letting me add levels or just create a super tall vase), wider by almost a foot and even a little deeper than my existing set up; ample room to craft many more pieces. Brand new, it goes for around $5,200. There's a slightly used one (only about 20 uses, under 3 years old) sold by the sole owner currently available on ebay for $2,850 (or best offer) including shipping.
So my hope is to do a quick fundraising request and put an offer in based on whatever I can secure. If you are in a position to help out, please don't send any money yet, just let me know what you might be able to contribute. After a couple days, I'll put the offer in and see if we are a go.
In return for your support, I'll...
* continue to make even more donation pieces for the causes our family supports (in the past I've contributed hundreds of dollars a year in product and cash to these efforts - targeting issues of poverty, education, gold star families, and community outreach)
* reimburse you in handcrafted glass goodness at double the rate of your contribution (e.g. donate $50 to the cause and I'll give you $100 in credit for my glasswork)
Please let me know if you have any questions
Take care and God Bless,
Peter

Remembering 2nd Lt. Joseph Fortin today along with all those who have given their lives for their country. Joe is the second entry in my Gold Star family memorial program (https://spirit-glass.myshopify.com/products/copy-of-handmade-art-glass-easter-egg-paperweight-red-white-blue-with-gold-mica-large-gold-star?). This service is free to immediate family members of the fallen.
The following was written by his surviving father.
Joseph Douglas Fortin, born November 5,1986, was named after 3 great grandfathers, born the youngest of 3 children in 39 months,(Jocelyn, Jennifer, & Joe). How proud my father was of all 6 of his grandchildren but for Joe to carry on the Fortin name, it meant a lot to my dad, it was a sign to him that he would do great things no matter how modest it would seem.
Joey as he was called in his younger years, loved to play good versus evil. Whether I was killed either as an Indian, robber, villain etc… . He was bound and determined to keep a peaceful country and world from a very young age. At three we have a picture of him dressed as a cowboy, 5/6 years old he was a true GI Joe muddied face, & who can forget The Batman with his cousin Denelle as Robin, and in high school he wanted to ride in police cars.
The true dynamics of my son to serve seem to come out the strongest when 9/11 happened. That beautiful clear September day, when our world & lives would change forever, convinced my son that we had to have a more peaceful world. Every waking moment he had when his studies were done he watched the tv about what would happen next. It was so hard for him to wrap his head around the idea that these people thought it alright to kill innocent peoples of all nationalities.
Joe graduated RWU in Criminal Justice, joined the ROTC program his freshman/ sophomore summer, and graduated as a 2nd Lt. He married two weeks later to a beautiful young lady, Nicquelle and went off to Oklahoma for heavy artillery training where he did so well in, that the Army held him back to teach the upcoming young officers.
He finally caught up to his battalion in Iraq through Fort Hood 4 months later. My wife and I went down to Fort Hood to say our goodbyes. Joe kept telling his worried mom that things would be alright because heavy artillery we’re always 10 miles behind the lines. I knew & he knew , in war he would be placed where the Army needed him. I asked why he wasn’t scared of dying? His response was,” dad , I could handle it if I go but if I give an order to my squad and anyone dies, I’ll never be able to forgive myself .”
Well that August 23,2009, our son Lt.Joseph D. Fortin died by a IED explosive device while he was on patrol. Miraculously only two injured in the rest of the convoy. Dear Joe, you truly did become an American Hero. How we miss your smile, beautiful eyes w/ long eyelashes , (lady killers). Your sense of generosity, your love of life with not a racial bone in you body. You died to save others and that you did. Your family including nieces and nephews born after your death all think about you regularly and you my son, “ SHALL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN “. Love Dad, Martin J. Fortin, Gold Star Father.
Picked up a few new and better ways for crafting the glass leading to some great improvements in the process. So started getting back into tumbler making and have been able to get the walls a bit thinner and the overall design more refined - you can check out these on my Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1242734621/handmade-art-glass-tumblers-set-of-2?

What’s In A Name...
The name as well as the logo image for my business, Spirit Glass, is rooted heavily in my own faith development. The name is drawn from an overall belief in a Creator who provides us with the skills and abilities that we can choose to use or not use as we journey through this life, and who, from time to time, changes things in ways that are not often easy to understand (if you haven’t read it yet, check out “The Case for Miracles by Lee Strobel https://www.amazon.com/Case-Miracles-Journalist-Investig…/…/ , which highlights numerous case studies on the ways that God continues to interact with our modern lives – if you were ever curious if miracles still happen, this is a great place to start).
The logo image has two important components – the flame representing the Holy Spirit and the gifts that are continually given to us while the “t” is shaped in the form of a cross, representing Jesus's love for all who call to him and the path of life I seek to lead to improve not only my own well-being but to support those around me. In recognition of the gifts I continue to receive and my growing faith in God and Christ, all my newly commissioned works from 10/19 on will include a small cross inscription next to my name and date on the bottom of all signed pieces.
In terms of my approach to the craft, I love the almost limitless capacity for originality and fluidity that blown and shaped glass presents. It allows for the connection of mind, body, and spirit into one complete form. With these elements, I seek to reshape the glass to get truly unique patterns and mixes of color, and make items that are both useful and inspiring. Every once in a while, something comes out of a finished glass piece that I could never have made happen on my own in a hundred tries, yet I am truly thankful when it does. This is the primary reason I stay with this medium and am always looking forward to the next finished piece.
Through my work, I also believe its important to share of one's gifts and use them to help those around me. To that end, I am pleased to offer my support to organizations I have a personal connection with and which have a proven history of valuing and supporting the sanctity of all human life through all its stages. Groups I’ve helped in the past include Neighbors to Nicaragua, Penacook Pregnancy Center, St. Patrick’s Church, Maddie’s Hands, NH Leadership Series, and others.
