Gold Coast City Council is currently under investigation by the state government following a significant raw sewage spill into a Gold Coast river. The council attributed the spill to a broken pipe that may have been leaking since January. Brad Wirth, Executive Director of the Department of Environment, expressed astonishment, noting that he had not witnessed a spill of such magnitude in Queensland before.

Despite one of the largest sewage spills in Australian history, seafood from the Logan and Albert rivers has been deemed safe for consumption by local fishers, confirmed by Queensland Health tests. The spill, originating from a paddock in Yatala, released an estimated 350-400 million litres equivalent to about 140 Olympic swimming pools of raw sewage into the Albert River which joins the Logan River at Eagleby between January and April. This equates to roughly four million litres daily. Despite the delayed awareness and reporting of the spill by the Gold Coast council, recent tests show no human health concerns from seafood caught in these rivers, bringing relief to anglers and prawn farms along the affected areas.

Officers are set to evaluate the Gold Coast City Council's sewage network infrastructure maintenance and management program to ascertain if the council is effectively handling its "ageing assets". The assessment may lead to enforcement measures against the council, such as issuing a statutory notice or pursuing prosecution. This scrutiny underscores the importance of robust infrastructure management to ensure public health and environmental protection.
