The SVC Criminology department is proud to share this news about Rebecca McCullough! Congratulations!

Student Organization & Leader Spotlight | Trial Advocacy Honor Society| President Rebecca McCullough

Mission: The Trial Advocacy Honor Society seeks to provide students with real life experiences while they practice their oral advocacy skills in various trial-like settings. Students receive professional instruction on every aspect of a trial and are able to apply what they have learned in various competitions.

Background: I became involved with Trial Advocacy because of my interest in oral advocacy and how a trial works from beginning to end. As a member of my undergraduate mock trial team, I was eager to learn new skills at Widener from various trial attorneys.

Leadership: I wanted to take on a leadership role in Trial Advocacy because of how much the program and my team in particular benefitted me this year. Immediately upon joining the organization, all the members made me feel like I was in the right place and there are so many resources available to you as a student. My team in particular, who participated in the ATLAC completion (go Amy and Mike!), showed me the value of teamwork and how bringing everyone’s skills together can create something amazing with hard work and practice.

Advice: My advice for other students would be to get involved as early as possible in what interests you! Trial Advocacy in particular offers 1Ls the opportunity to participate in practices as witnesses, which is a great way to get your foot in the door and see what Trial Ad is all about. There is no better way to see if you are interested in something than to try it out!

McCullough is originally from Harrisburg, PA and graduated from Saint Vincent College. After law school graduation, she wishes to practice law in local government with Dauphin County.

Today, Dr. Daly and two students, Anne Darla Pamphile and Casey Newcomer, presented early findings from their research study at the Eastern Sociological Society conference in Philadelphia. The students were excellent presenters, and the other members of the fantastic panel, Drs. Jill Kehoe and Colleen Eren (pictured with Dr. Daly), had wonderful things to say about them as well! It was an informative (and even fun!) panel. We’re very proud of our Criminology students, and we look forward to more conference participation in the future!

Julie Falat graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Law, and Society in May 2017. Upon finishing her bachelor’s degree, she pursued a Master’s degree in Criminology and was part of the first cohort of students to begin the program. During the Master’s program and for a year after, Julie worked at Adelphoi Village, a residential treatment setting for juveniles. During this time, she was promoted to a Shift Supervisor. From Bruce Antkowiak, Chair of Criminology, Law, & Society:

It is with great sadness that I relate to you that our friend and colleague, Professor Mike Kuhar of the Criminology Department, died suddenly last evening of an apparent heart attack. He was out hunting, something he loved to do.

At 230PM today, a brief prayer service will be held for Mike in the Student Chapel.

Professor Kuhar taught here at Saint Vincent since 2011. In many ways, he helped found the Criminology Department. His experience in the area was unparalleled. In his career, he served as the Chief Probation Officer, the Court Administrator and the Warden of Indiana County. He was one of the most respected people in the field of Corrections in the Commonwealth.

But more than all of that, Mike was an outstanding human being who loved and cared deeply for his students. He helped many students find careers in the law and was a generous and beloved colleague.

We will miss him deeply. Funeral arrangements have not been set as of this moment.

Please keep Mike and his family in your prayers.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Criminology department! We’re thankful for all of you!

An update on C**t Robinson C’18, M.S. ‘19!

He officially starts in his new position as an Allegheny County Juvenile Probation Officer on November 12!

The Criminology department is so proud of his achievements, and we look forward to hearing about his experiences and professional success! Congratulations!

Read C**ton Robinson's journey to the master's program in Criminology in the Saint Vincent College McKenna School. We are immensely proud of C**ton and his achievements and experiences helping children at Adelphoi Village, and we are excited for him to continue his journey to become a Pennsylvania State Trooper. C**ton will graduate with his Master of Science degree on May 11. Congratulations, C**ton!

"Before deciding to attend Saint Vincent College, I was not entirely sure what career path I wanted to follow. First, I began a pharmacy program. I quickly lost interest in the program and realized that I must continue in a field about which I was truly passionate. I searched and tested many fields of study until I finally felt a connection in Criminology. Once sophomore year started, I found myself with thoughts of becoming a member of law enforcement. My desire of helping and protecting members of society formed my decision to become a future police officer. Throughout the undergraduate program at SVC, I fell more in love with the program and department each year as I found a passion for the education which would bring me to my career of choice.

Upon graduating with my Bachelor’s in Criminology, Law, & Society in 2018, I made the decision to continue my education while working in my field. I accepted a position with Adelphoi Village as a Youth Service Worker. Over the course of the past year I was able to earn three promotions to become a Senior Counselor. Through Adelphoi Village, I obtained the privilege of counseling juvenile delinquents struggling with substance abuse and sexual offenders with mental health issues. During this time, I attended classes to achieve my Master’s degree in Criminology along with other opportunities such as writing a chapter for an upcoming edited book. I plan to use this knowledge I have gained throughout my years of studying Criminology to become an officer of the law by starting my ACT 120 Certification at California University of Pennsylvania while continuing my process in the hiring process for the Pennsylvania State Police."

On Monday, three Criminology students attended a panel discussion in Pittsburgh with Dr. Daly. Presented by Reform, commentator and activist Van Jones, Representative Ed Gainey (D-East Liberty), criminal defense attorney Patrick Nightingale, and Patrick Purtill of the conservative nonprofit group, Faith and Freedom Coalition, discussed the issue of "smart probation" reform in Pennsylvania. Their work to support and would change the lives of 700,000 people in the state.

The students met Van Jones and the other speakers and met with the film crew and communications director who asked to come to Saint Vincent College the following day! They brought their wrapped tour bus for photos and open discussion about criminal justice reform, and Dr. Daly and some of the students were interviewed for the documentary! We were happy to welcome them to Saint Vincent, and we look forward to the opportunity to work with Reform in the future.

The Pittsburgh City Paper covered the story (available here: https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/cnn-anchor-van-jones-rep-ed-gainey-advocate-probation-reform-in-east-liberty/Content?oid=15867700). More good news about our graduates! Meet Anthony Sestito who graduated from the Criminology department with his bachelor's degree in 2018 and his master's degree in 2019. He was recently hired by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

"When I decided to pursue a degree in Criminology, I did so in the hope that I could benefit society in some way. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) gives me the opportunity to protect society through their means of transportation. TSA employees are more than an individual wearing a blue shirt asking someone to remove their shoes; they are a group of individuals designed to shield society from attacks on America’s transportation systems. TSA has a multitude of responsibilities, but they are ones I am honored to uphold and strive to represent for my profession and myself."

We're proud of Anthony and his hard work, and we look forward to hearing more success stories from him and all of our graduates!
