Focus on Canada South proudly announces that our Artists of the Month for September 2024 is Jeff Stiles. Jeff spent the first 30 years of his music life writing his own songs, playing to 10 people, incuding bar staff, and generally getting disgruntled at the lack of enthusiasm.
He played in original bands all through the eighties and early nineties. His first real band was Do Or Diatribe, a gothy kinda punk/new wave band with Nancy Drew, Rob Brun and Al Muir in 1985. They’ve kept in touch and had a couple reunion gigs in the past and even recorded a new song. Later Jeff joined Lost Patrol, a retro garage rock outfit featuring Paul Langan, Karen Marrero, Dave Whitehead and Rob Michie.
Soon after, Jeff's brush with stardom happened. He joined a band called Vavoom that featured Angie Woman on vocals, Dave Cyrenne on bass and Jeff Burrows on drums. He was replacing Angie’s recent ex-husband Dave Hanna on guitar. Before their split, Jeff had written them a song called New York bec Angie was always talking about how cool it was.Angie changed the title to Detroit. Dave recorded it and the song became a kind of local hit on 89x in the spring of 1992.
Vavoom were asked to play some pretty decent gigs in the Detroit area because of the song's popularity. They were even asked to audition for Ed Mcmahon’s Star Search. Things didnt go well though however and Dave and Jeff were fired for their lack of focus.
Jeff remembers playing Rush songs at Jeff Martin's studio while we were waiting for the engineer to get ready when we were scolded by Angie for wasting time and a couple other missteps. Jeff thought it funny that he was fired from a band that he wrote the song that got the band noticed. He took it personally and felt sh*tty at the same time. For a time Jeff thought that he had blown his chance. "Getting famous" was his goal back then even though he had no idea what that really meant or what level of commitment it took.
After that Jeff took a break to start a family. His daughter Maddy was born in 1992 followed by Megan in 1996. He couldn’t let the music itch go. He had to play, write, perform. It was just in him. His wife didnt understand. She saw it as a distraction from family life, which it was. She was as patient as she could be but he was raised in a family that made it seem like career goals were more important than people. Jeff kept thinking that he didnt have value unless he made something of himself career wise. Jeff made a choice and went out on his own in 2000.
He made a solo acoustic CD and began playing around town. Reviews were good and he had a feeling he was doing the right thing. It got stale real quick. The crowds at bars dwindled. Jeff was not persistent. The work set in.
He didnt accept the challenge. He recoiled, got bitter, felt like a failure and stopped playing. He took a job as a writer at a local magazine called Upfront. He wrote edgy reviews of live bands, Cds and movies. He did feature stories about downtown life. It was all very crude. He even had a wine column which was equally crude but Ihe enjoyed it.
Jeff knew he needed to make a change, so he did. He continued writing songs and finally started another band in 2008 called the StiG with Jay Zeman and Cory Low on drums. Cory left and was later replaced by Brad Blackton. They recorded and played many gigs at FM lounge, but Jeff lost interest because, again, things weren’t happening..
StiG made a Five song EP that Jeff was very proud of. He sent it everywhere it seemed - to most colleges and universities in Canada. Jeff figured it would catch on somewhere. They did make it to #9 on a weekly countdown in Kamloops, BC but that was it. “Maybe I suck?” He pondered.
But his “get knocked down, get back up again” spirit prevailed and Jeff joined forces with a one-man band called Mrs Smith led by a bass player extraordinaire named John Ashley. They added Rob Michie on drums and away they went. They enjoyed many local gigs and recorded a song called “All I Do is Cry”. Again his expectations for the single were high but reaction wasnt.
The band split and Jeff met Lisa Rowley, a singer from Huntsville. Her powerful voice could stop a show yet she wasnt crazy about original material. She would would rather sing covers. Jeff was a snob about covers. He would rather write originals as he felt cover bands were a cop out.
Finally Jeff gave in and they formed the band First Fall. They began as a duo playing Saturday nights at the Walkerville Eatery. Later on, they added his friend Al Bondy on bass and, later still, Rob Michie on drums.
They’ve played Cosmos at the Casino and many other clubs and restaurants like the River’s Edge, where they played twice a month for over a year. They continue to evolve and to have success in the local scene. Jeff believes Lisa’s voice is at the heart of it. He knows many bands with amazing players, but if you’ve got a great singer, it takes you to another level.
Jeff co-hosts an open mic night at Below the Tracks in Tecumseh once a month. This is great night and lots of fine players show up for it. Congratulations Jeff. https://www.facebook.com/FOCUSONCANADASOUTH

Focus on Canada South proudly announces that our Artists of the Month for July 2024 is Ted Boomer. Ted with his brother Ken brought hundreds of entertaining shows to the Windsor area over the decades. From the entertainment staged at Danny's on Riverside Drive to the opening and expansion of California's on Walker Road, popular classic rock-era entertainers graced their stages.
In the early 90s, Ted with his partner Lucky, gave us the repurposing of the historic Birks Jewelry building on Ouellette Ave into Johnny Canucks. At Johnny Canucks live music and comedy, combined with great food brought life back to this historic building.
Ted always knew that it was about putting bums in the seats and showing the people a good time. His keen business sense was bigger than life.
I remember Ted telling me that he believed that we could close Ouellette Ave, promote and stage a weekend Bluesfest, in front of Johnny Canucks, with less than six weeks to plan, pull permits, promote and execute. Casually, while we were having a beer.
In less than two weeks, headline acts were organized and we were seated before the Windsor City Council asking for the street closure. The City gave their approval conditional on clearance from the Windsor Police Service and the downtown merchants who would be affected.
With the clock ticking a favorable arrangement was made and Windsor Police Service gave their approval conditional on meeting the conditions of Windsor Fire and Rescue.
While contracts were being signed with headline acts and posters and tickets were being designed, negotiations with Windsor Fire and Rescue and the downtown merchants continued.
Stage design had to be altered to keep a full lane of Ouellette Ave open for fire vehicles in the event of an emergency. So now we had half the stage to work with.
With just over three weeks until the launch of Bluesfest 95, all hands where on deck and prepared to stage a world class show on Ouellette Ave.
It was Jeff Healey, James Cotton and Downchild Blues Band that headlined Bluesfest 95. But it was the passion, belief and determination of Ted Boomer and a dedicated team of organizers and volunteers, who refused to accept anything less than putting bums in the seats and showing the people a good time with some world-class Blues. Thank you and Congratulations Ted. https://www.facebook.com/FOCUSONCANADASOUTH

Focus on Canada South proudly announces that our Artists of the Month for April 2024 is Amy Rivard. Amy is a Canadian singer/songwriter, began her musical journey in Windsor, at Holy Names High School, where she excelled in the choir, band, and in high school musicals. She competed in many Kiwanis music festivals, placing first and taking her to province-wide competitions.
Her passion for performance led her to the Windsor Light Opera and Theatre Alive, setting the stage for her pursuit of the arts at the University of Windsor. There, Amy earned a BFA Honours Musical Theatre Degree, receiving accolades such as the Leddy Scholarship and the University of Windsor Odyssey Award in 2010.
In addition to receiving the Leddy Scholarship, Amy paid for her studies by singing at many weddings in Windsor, Ontario—she may have even performed at yours.
Thanks to Windsor Star’s Bob Duff, Amy began performing the national anthems for NASCAR at Michigan International and Watkins Glen, which soon led her to perform anthems for the NY Rangers, NY Islanders, and she also performed the anthems for the very first PWHL game in the United States early this year.
Amy's musical talents have taken her to over 30 countries, where she has graced the stage in renowned productions like Riverdance & Riverdance On Broadway, Celtic Woman, and The Roy Orbison Story (with Roy’s younger brother, Sam Orbison). Her international experiences include headlining shows at Tokyo Disney, performing her cabaret in London, and even living on a cruise ship while showcasing her one-woman show on SilverSea Cruises.
While on tour, Amy missed her home and native land and would throw Canada parties hosted by her alter-ego, Candy Canadiana. Upon returning to Windsor, Ontario, she came across the Canada House and created her award-winning YouTube series “What’s Up Canuck?” Starring her alter-ego, Candy Canadiana. The series won her a trip to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and the gold medal men’s hockey game. She’s super grateful to Mike Evans and Mickey Dutta who shot and edited the series.
In recent years, Amy has captivated audiences in New York City with her original music at esteemed venues like the Metropolitan Room, Birdland, Bemelman’s Bar, Rockwood Music Hall, and Tavern on the Green. Her music transcends genres, ranging from jazz and pop to folk, showcasing her versatile talents as a singer and songwriter. Beyond her music career, Amy has also made her mark in commercials and films, including playing the female lead in Planting Vines by Windsor’s own Suede Productions. Her commercial work includes spots like the Motomaster ad with Canada’s Indy Race Car Driver, James Hinchcliffe. Amy has also produced several music videos for her original songs. One such video is "The Three Divas," which draws inspiration from the ghost stories Amy heard at The Astor Room, in the legendary Kaufman Astoria Studios. Built in 1920, Kaufman Astoria Studios is one of the world's first movie studios and was the original home to Paramount Pictures, which may explain the presence of ghosts in the building. Co-produced with Kaufman Astoria Studios, the video brings to life the spirits of silent film stars Gloria Swanson, Betty Bronson, and Sylvia Sydney. Another notable music video of Amy's is for her song "When We Come Together." Amy is grateful for the support of Windsor’s own Chris Kiritsis of Life in 360 Media, who collaborated with her to create a stunning 360-degree music video showcasing the beautiful scenery between Windsor and Detroit. You can find both on her YouTube channel.
Amy recently unveiled two new singles: “Cuckoo for You,” an infectious electronic pop track, and “Fool to Love You,” a jazz reinterpretation of an obscure John Mayer tune. The vocals for these tracks were recorded at Windsor's AudioDen Studios, under the guidance of the Domenic Ambrosio. Amy and Dom are currently collaborating on new material, so be sure to stay tuned and follow her to catch their latest releases. Her upcoming release, "I Still Believe in Love," is a nostalgic nod to the 90s, blending electronic pop with heartfelt lyrics. This captivating track is now hitting the airwaves.
Mark your calendars for May 26th to catch Amy at Caesar's Windsor. Amy is excited to be one of the youngest members performing in the Canadian tour of Menopause the Musical on Sunday May 26th at CAESAR'S Windsor with two shows at 3pm and 8pm.
Amy's music can be found on all streaming sites. Stay connected by following her on social media. Congratulations Amy. https://www.facebook.com/FOCUSONCANADASOUTH

Focus on Canada South proudly announces that our Artists of the Month for February 2024 is the band Wynbridge. Formed in 1973 with members, Peter Straw, Ron Demarse, Dennis Renaud, Robert (Bob) Laporte and Den Lauzon. Kevin Peterson later replaced Ron Demerse on guitar. The band's local popularity was contagious as they played all of the crowd's favorite songs. Both Bob and Den came from the popular band Sardonicus.
At times, Wynbridge added new keyboard players and also became a six-piece band for a short time. Kevin Adair (vocals and keys) and Dave Charron (vocals and keys). More local and road gigs followed.
This line-up was on and off-road playing gigs. Following the original line-up, Wynbridge experimented with adding keyboards, most notably the addition of Mitch Lewis. Mitch's keyboards, vocals, compositions and personality added new layers to the sound and the bands presence. They played the bigger clubs in Windsor and around the region. The band got very tight.
In July 1974, with support from solid management, Wynbridge polished their best original songs and recorded demos at Acusound Studio in Windsor. Mushroom Records, who had the hit band Heart, were showing interest in Wynbridge, so in 1975 management made arrangements to record at Pro Sound Studios in Detroit Michigan, with Bob Denis (Motown roots) as engineer/co-producer. Wynbridge recorded two master tracks of their most popular originals, The Pete Straw, Kevin Peterson song Sunshine Rain and the Mitch Lewis composition, Why Do You Make Me Feel This Way. Den Lauzon arranged the band's rich vocal textures.
Returning to Windsor that day, Wynbridge stopped in at CJOM 88.7 FM, in downtown Windsor, They did an interview with Paul Nathan and performed their newly recorded compositions live on-air during afternoon drive time. This impromptu performance was the first time a band was given this opportunity. Local artist Jim Beveridge created a logo for the band. The community came together to support Wynbridge.
Den Lauzon left the band temporarily, to join ex-Sardonicus members to form the band Meadows. Rick Shaw joined Wynbridge on bass. Rick added a cool supportive presence to the bottom end of the band's sound.
The next stage in Wynbridge's evolution featured Peter Straw, Kevin Peterson, and Robert Laporte with Brad Ward on bass. Brad was an exceptional musician with a style like no other. He helped redefine the bands pocket. Once more, they played locally and on the road, now opening for some bigger Detroits acts, and playing college and university campus events.
Wynbridge's next big break came in March 1975 when they opened for Bob Seger to a sold out audience at the University of Windsor. It was just before Bob Seger launched the Silver Bullet Band, The audience and Seger's band thought Wynbridge were outstanding, as they performed their new originals with an experimental rock style, while pre-recorded sound bites transitioned between songs. A unique concept for the time.
In 1976 Bob moved to Toronto hoping the band could break into the Toronto market. Later Den and Peter got tired of road life. Looking back Robert said "I just remember playing six days a week and traveling on Sundays". Den and Peter were still Windsor-based.
Mitch and Robert had lots of auditions with musicians trying to replace Den and Peter before they happened on to The next line-up that featured Robert and Mitch with Ken Moyer on guitar and Rick Lockhart on bass.
Again they rehearse and then back to local and road gigs. At this point, they were all Toronto(ish) based. The band played into 76-77, Trying their best to stay positive they just kept plugging away and playing constantly. After all of this they decided it was time to come off the road.
Thanks to Bob Laporte for his help compiling this information.
Wynbridge, is a band whose history spanned much of the 1970's, the decade that arguably gave us the greatest rock music of all time and Wynbridge wrote great songs, worked hard and gave it their very best.
Links to Wynbridge songs on YouTube will be posted in the comment section. Congratulations to all the members of the band.https://www.facebook.com/FOCUSONCANADASOUTH
