REVIEW: Corners of Sanctuary – “Mirror, Mirror (Look into My Eyes)”
Cover songs are nothing new. Many popular artists over the years have offered their rendition of another artist's song. From Elvis Presley to the Beatles, from Kiss to Judas Priest and everyone in between; cover songs have been and always will be a staple component for any artist or band looking to broaden their musical range.
Finally throwing their own hats into the cover song arena after 10 years of delivering nothing but all original, traditional Heavy Metal music, Philadelphia headbandgers, Corners of Sanctuary, (COS), kick the New Year off with a very tight version of Def Leppard's "Mirror, Mirror (Look into My Eyes)," off the groups 1981 album "High n Dry."
COS chose this particular track as they felt it was most "in line" with their own sound and style of classic Metal according to guitarist Mick Michaels. The original version of the song, however, definitely captures the essence of that early Metal era, as the genre was taking its foothold on what would follow to become the decade of decadence.
Corners of Sanctuary have hit this one right out of the park. They not only captured the essence of the original song and of the era, they have also managed to give the song a modern boost of relevance that harkens it back to the heyday of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. There is definitely a level of feeling as though you have been transported back in time, but with a freshness that surrounds the entire production and there's nothing dated about it.
Additionally, COS took a lot of artistic license and added what fans of the band have come to expect from them; their own flair to the arrangement without sacrificing quality. The inclusion of an intro, several breaking glass effects and even an altering of the original arrangement of the bridge and solo sections adds to the uniqueness of this version. These flavorful additions only enhance the song's overall qualities and appeal and hammer home that this is a completely different version; one that Corners of Sanctuary put their stamp on.
Corners of Sanctuary's "Mirror, Mirror" releases January 14th and will be made available as a free MP3 download exclusively through the band, at their official website, www.cornersofsanctuary.com, and by Inner Demon Media, www.innerdemonmedia.com.
A video for "Mirror, Mirror" will also be available on Corners of Sanctuary's YouTube channel and page, www.facebook.com/CornersofSanctuary.
Go check it out. You won't be disappointed.
