Jo-Anne is the Owner and Director of LEAP and a vital member of the Senior Therapeutic Team.
With qualifications from the USA and Derby University, she is a Systemic and Solution Focused Family Therapist, Addiction Counselor, and Clinical Supervisor. Jo-Anne's career spans research at the Child Institute of Mental Health in London to extensive practice in the USA, Singapore, and the UK.
Jo-Anne runs a successful private practice in Berkshire, working with a herd of ex-polo and rescue ponies, focusing on young clients aged 8-24. As one of the first LEAP EFP/L graduates, Jo-Anne continues to contribute to the field with her expertise and dedication.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Galereta (GiGi) and Tanita this last week. We managed their pain as best we could but GiGi told us that it was time.
Gigi was amazing at this work even though she also loved playing polo. She took care of my girls when they were riding her, always looking out for them and keeping them safe while being so good at what she loved. With clients and learners she was kind, gentle and very giving but first you had to respect and have patience with her, otherwise she had no time for you.
Tanita was quiet yet strong with a huge heart to give. She wanted to trust but you had to earn it, yet when you did she would do anything and go anywhere with you. You need a hug, she’ll be right there.
Thank you both for being you and helping us with so many things that we needed guidance on.

"When I first started this work, I saw horses as mirrors or medicine—tools for reflection. However, my perception has evolved. Are they truly mirrors or medicine, or are they authentically being themselves? I find that, for some, they bring out recognizable behaviors in the herd, a reflection of authenticity. LEAP Equine
Our purpose at LEAP is to provide safe and healing Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) and Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) for individuals and groups, and to provide high quality, professional training for those who wish to become EFP/L practitioners.
LEAP was set up in 2006, originally as a charity, with a key programme being a project with Children in Need. This programme was working with children and teenagers who had been abused and it ran for just over a year, highlighting to the team of the need for high quality and professional training in this emerging area of work. The LEAP model was developed shortly afterwards offering an integrative and embodied approach. A model developed through over 1000 client hours and clinical practice. It has been influenced by the work of Barbara Rector, HEAL, Eagala & Epona (all USA based training and approaches), our training team initially trained in other approaches as UK training wasn’t available at the time.
The model includes active and reflective exercises, and it can be tailored to meet the needs of different clients groups or for individual needs and ages. The key to the model is the concept of a creative, living model that each practitioner can adapt and develop according to their clients' needs, and their own strengths and talents as a Practitioner. LEAP is unique in that we also consider the horses to be therapists in their own right rather than a 'tool' for the therapist; they're given the choice and freedom in the work they do or choose not to do. The physical and emotional welfare of the horse is paramount, as is the selection of appropriate horses for a therapeutic herd.
Offering a UK based approach with extensive experience working with clients, complexities of working with referring agencies, extensive corporate, counselling and trauma work, our team are passionate about sharing this experience and knowledge with our trainees.
