Millennials Show Us What ‘Old’ Looks Like | Disrupt Aging 18/07/2024

"When people start stopping, that's when they start getting old."

Stop blaming your age if there's something you don't LIKE to do and you just don't want to do it anymore.

Start adjusting and modifying the things you like/love to do if there are new obstacles in your way.

Keep going.☺️🥰

Millennials Show Us What ‘Old’ Looks Like | Disrupt Aging What age do you consider to be old? We posed that question to millennials in this social experiment and asked them to show us what “old” looks like. Then we ...

There’s nothing like a MASSIVE American flag hot air balloon to make you feel patriotic! 🇺🇸

The 4th of July is always a nostalgic holiday for me. There’s nothing that quite captures the feeling of summer like a massive spread of food, pool party 🌊, and laughing with family and friends.

🎆A special excitement lingers as the day winds down, knowing that the kids will be setting off fireworks when the sun goes down (it's legal in NE, lol)! Que Celine Dion singing “God Bless America” and Bruce Springsteen singing “Born in the USA”! Just the thought makes me a little weepy, ICONIC!

No matter how many years go by, the 4th of July never fails to spark a childlike awe in me.

What sparks this kind of childlike, carefree summer vibes in you? I’d love to hear in the comments! Maybe it's a family vacation, renting a boat, going to a water park, going on a rollercoaster, or a family brunch - whatever it is, I want to hear about it!

Do you ever feel STUCK? 🥺 Stuck in grief? Stuck in fight or flight (ie. constant adrenaline)? Or maybe it's just been a long day and the brain fog is REAL! 😩

One of my favorite things to do when I'm feeling stuck is getting out and going for a walk. 🚶‍♀️The fresh air, the sun on my face, the breeze surrounding me...there's something about it that just makes my SOUL feel refreshed. 💁‍♀️

(pro tip: the refreshment comes often from the MINDFULNESS of the warmth of the sun ☀️, the soft breeze, ☁️ the air against my cheek - really feeling into all the senses!)

Here's the icing on the cake 🧁! Science backs the idea that going for a walk can change your state of mind and reduce the stress you're feeling.

Walking triggers what's called "neurogenesis" in the brain 🧠. Simply put, this is when NEW neurons are created. The creation of these new neurons actually increases the production of serotonin and endorphins. These chemical responses are proven to improve your mood and put you in a space of greater calm, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. ☺️

When trauma and grief get stuck in your brain, especially when you're busy, it can be hard to find a way to let it out in a way that feels healthy and actually productive.

Walking is a great place to start. 🏃‍♀️

Next time you're feeling stuck, try walking it out! I bet it will help more than you think!

Do you enjoy going for walks when you feel stuck or foggy? How has it helped you? Let me know in the comments!

VULNERABILITY. What words come to mind when you read that? 🤔

Uncomfortable? Unsafe? Exposed? Authentic?

In the past, situations where I felt vulnerable ended up creating a lot of safety issues for me. It was very uncomfortable for me. 🆘 I would feel frozen, but also like I wanted to run and fight - all at the same time.

Over time, I really made efforts to grow in this area and surrounded myself with people that I felt EARNED my trust - even in those vulnerable moments. My husband was and continues to be a very safe space for me. This has been a very slow process, but eventually, I found myself feeling SAFE in those vulnerable spaces. I wasn’t scared anymore. 🕊️

I realized the difference is that the TRUST I developed is in myself. The change is in me. 💯

Now, I continue to create my OWN safety without relying on someone else to provide it. I’ve learned that I can even leave a space that doesn’t align with this value.

This may sound simple, but honestly, this has required a lot of time and patience with myself...and I'm still learning.

Because of my life experiences, I realize the value and NEED for authentic support; a place to be vulnerable while still being SAFE.

To take it a step further, I ALSO realize the strain it can have on a person to feel like they're on an 🏝️ island; to feel like no one gets it, no one is worthy of trust, and constantly feeling the need to just power through for another day, week, month (which soon turns to years…) 💪

Now, I'm honored to create safe spaces for others. Where you can be vulnerable, where you won't be judged, and where you can receive the real, practical support and encouragement you deserve....it EXISTS! 🥰

Here are 6 tips you need to know if you are an OUT OF TOWN DAUGHTER! 🚗

In the past few weeks, I’ve been privileged to learn a lot about supporting out-of-town family members. It’s been a blessing to walk through this experience, deepening my understanding of how best to support families in similar situations. 🙏🏻

Here are 6 practical tips I’ve discovered that may help you if your loved one is far away: 👇🏼

1. Family Communication System: 💬 Everyone is worried. Keep people in the know with a family text thread, FB Page, or set up a CaringBridge page.

2. Be Connected: ☎️ Who do you call if you can’t reach them directly? Have the phone numbers of their best friend, doorman, trainer, anyone they see on the regular. Ensure everyone has your contact info too.

3. Know YOUR strengths: 💪🏼 Focus on what you’re good at and let other family members, their friends, or professional care providers, fill in the gaps. You don’t have to be everything to everyone. 😀

4. Find Your Professional Resources: 📍 Know what home health, rehab, and senior living communities are available in their area. There may be a hospital stay and quick discharge and they still require ongoing care. Have your top picks ready.

5. Create Moments of Joy: 🤪 Find some fun among the chaos! Everything gets so serious and heavy, it’s important to lighten things up when possible. Take a drive, grab a special treat, flip through pictures or call another family member.

6. Be Ready for Emergencies: 🚨 Have your own support systems in place at home and a travel bag ready for quick departures. Emergencies are unpredictable, but when you’re prepared and have a plan, they are not as overwhelming!

Caring for a long-distance family member is tough and requires A TON of sacrifice. If you’re in this situation, I SEE YOU! I’m here to support you every step of the way. 💖

If you’re the daughter trying to keep it all together, figuring out the next steps, family dynamics, or even how to manage your mindset - let’s talk. 🥹 I promise you’ll leave the call feeling better than you showed up!

And we continue to do💖

We have faced some of life’s greatest challenges and experienced some of life’s most tremendous joys. We have grown in different ways, at different times. We are separate and yet completely interwoven.

Nurses have saved my life.

TWICE

When my body was failing on 2 separate occasions from anaphylactic shock, once on my college campus from a reaction to celery, and once in France from penicillin, they swiftly jumped into action and did all the things needed to stabilize me and take care of me.

I have many friends and family who are Nurses, have worked with the most INCREDIBLE Nurses, and have had so many family members cared for by wonderful nurses.

THANK YOU NURSES for all you do!

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!” 🕯️

This song was so powerful to me as a kid. We sang it all the time at church camp. 🙏🏻 I remember seeing a poster in my elementary school in Brooklyn Heights, NY that said “You don’t need to blow out my light to make yours shine brighter.” 💨

It reminds me how as caregivers, we tend to let our light burn out to ensure that the person we’re helping keeps their light lit. 💡 But the truth is, if we put our lights together, we can shine even brighter! 🔥🔥🔥

Let your light shine bright and nurture it and just watch how it sparks the light in your loved one. ☀️

"Caregivers" aren't an abstract group of people.

“They” are us, we are them.

Caregivers are our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends, our family members.

I recently learned the term Umbutu, "I am because we are", from Doc Rivers.

Doc said, "I can't be all that I can be unless you can be all that you can be."

When 1 caregiver is supported, we all do better. 💖💕

Jimmy Carter, America's longest living president, is marking 1 year in hospice care 19/02/2024

President Carter, at 99, has 1 year anniversary with Hospice services.

YES - “While the public may find this unusual, those of us who do hospice and palliative care don't find this as unusual,” Quest said.

Patients often see better outcomes – living longer as well as better quality of life – with earlier referrals for hospice care, Quest said.

YES - my father in law took a road trip to CO with his sons while receiving hospice services.

YES - the reason people only take advantage of the extraordinary care hospice provides for less than 3 months is, they wait to receive
those benefits.

YES - "We find that when we can mitigate suffering and support family caregivers who are taking care of patients, that when you add all of those factors together that patients do far better," Quest added.

Doctors are trained to keep going until all options are exhausted.
This is wonderful, AND we get to decide when we are exhausted from all the options.

Jimmy Carter, America's longest living president, is marking 1 year in hospice care The former president, already the longest living commander-in-chief, turned 99 while in hospice care last year.
