When a client asks to build an identity for his clothing brand around Ancient Roman imagery, I jumped at the chance! The reasoning for the clothing brand to be centered around a Roman Centurion was to represent the client’s Italian lineage and fearlessness he displayed during his boxing career. The goal was to create an identity that aligns with a brand that wants to sponsor legendary athletes. Full case study coming soon.

Lakehawks Athletics Brand Identity
Client / Lake Sumter State College

Lake Sumter State College (LSSC) provides an athletic program for its students to compete in for 2 years before moving to a 4 year institution.

What started out as an inquiry to polish up the current athletic logos and to create apparel, turned into a full rebrand of the athletic identity. This came to fruition after assessing the current branding and understanding what the school wanted to achieve.

– Identified Problem

After a brand audit, we identified some problems that needed to be addressed that were holding the visual identity back: The current iteration of the two hawk logos had way too many colors (12 in all). Versatility and scaling to a smaller size would be virtually impossible in such cases as embroidery and screen printing. There is a lot of small detail which doubles down on the versatility and scaling issue while making these feel more like an illustration rather than a logo for a collegiate athletic program.

– Approved Solution

To combat the issues listed above, I proposed the following solution that was approved by the school: Refine Lakehawk heads (frontal & side view) by simplifying the detail to become more flexible for usage within a visual system. Reduce the brand palette to use 3-5 colors max. Refresh to resemble a more high-level and modern pro sports identity while retaining the fierce character. Expand the visual identity by creating a body for the frontal hawk head that matches the new simplified aesthetic of bold, modern and fierce. Update the “Lakehawks” wordmark to be more custom and match the new aesthetic of the visual system.

The results included a much stronger, flexible and cohesive visual identity that is more representative of not just LSSC but of a collegiate athletic program.

Reimagining the Super Bowl VIII Logo

Had fun reimagining this year’s Super Bowl logo which is located in Las Vegas. I kept the same color scheme from the actual logo but gave it a more unique and location centric look. Swipe to see the logo mocked up on the estimated jersey colors of the 2 participating teams: KC Chiefs [Red] vs SF 49ers [White].

Disappointed my Eagles couldn’t make it back this season but should be a good game!

I was approached by Envision to help their client Kirkwood Community College reimagine their eagle based athletic visual identity. We wanted to give Kirkwood a big time sports program feel.

Over the course of the project we went through a variety of iterations until we landed on the presented system.

As you scroll through you'll see a few of the marks that were created along with a custom typeface that was used to create the wordmarks.

Gators Athletics Brand Identity
Client / Unquowa School

I was approached by AgencySacks to help upgrade the athletic branding for their client, Unquowa School which is K-8 and located in Connecticut. AgencySacks was in the middle of rebranding their academic marks and I was happy to join the project with the overarching goal of modernizing the athletic identity, centered around an alligator. In the end, we didn't just create a modernized alligator that is unique to the school, but created a cohesive suite of assets the school can deploy for it's athletic department for years to come.

To help bridge the gap with the new academic branding, we worked within the same color palette except I introduced a lighter green to be used exclusively with the athletic marks. I also integrated the wave pattern from the school crest, into the gator and the wordmark to further tie both branding systems together.

Design Shark

Since the age of five, creative juices were running through my veins. When I wasn’t eating or watching cartoons, I was creating something, whether that was spending hours building with LEGOs or putting my imagination to paper. Today, I’m a more refined creative problem solver, with much more experience but I still have that same passion & curiosity to drive me years later. I’m aware of trends but don’t rely on them as the goal is to create timeless, unique solutions to help brands stand out of the sea of competition. Designing concept-driven brand identities for businesses in the corporate & sport industries.

I’ve had a fascination with sharks for as long as I can remember, about as long as I’ve been drawing actually. It was only fitting to create my visual identity by incorporating these majestic animals into my brand. On a more technical level, Merriam-Webster defines shark as: “one who excels greatly especially in a particular field”. Beyond that, I believe sharks to be swimming metaphors of great design: Sharks have been icons of the ocean for over 65 million years, which renders them timeless. They have done this by being functional in their environment, versatile and adaptive. Sounds like traits of a well designed logo to me!
