Tuesday night marked the formal end of the 2023-24 Woodland Hills athletics calendar, as each student-athlete who suited up for the Wolverines this past school year was celebrated at the district's annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.
The ceremony celebrates the spirit of competition and sportsmanship, as well as the drive that it takes to balance academics with pursuing one or more sports in high school. Each team officially sponsored by the Woodland Hills Athletic Department is recognized in front of the players' peers, teachers, and families during the ceremony.
A handful of student-athletes received individual awards from the athletic department. Pierce Cannon and Carmen Vasquez were recognized with the Distinguished Athlete Award, Bree Boyd and Nathan Scott were presented the Leadership Award, Juliana Connelly and Aidan Potter were recognized with the Sportsmanship Award, and Lena Laubscher and Tynan Saunders were recognized with the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award. Swimming and diving coach Walt Reamer was presented the 2023-24 Coach of the Year Award.
Several generous benefactors also present senior student-athletes with scholarship awards during the ceremony. The Mitchell P. Harmon Memorial Scholarship Foundation - Male and Female Scholar Athlete Award was presented to Mia Damico and Andre Smith. The Caileigh Lynn McDowell Foundation Scholarship was awarded to Bree Boyd. The Roxamore Sports Athletic Leadership Award went to Marcus Williams. The PLAY4MAE Foundation Scholarships were presented to Dom Wilson, Carmen Vasquez, Hope Hawkins, and Jhalynn Wilson. Finally, the United States Marine Corps Male and Female Scholar Athlete Awards went to Mia Damico, Zoe Spear, and Antonio Nash.
The ceremony also takes time to recognize scholar athletes who meet certain academic standards, as well as athletes who play three or four sports in one school year and seniors who earned a varsity letter in each of their four years of high school. For a full list of students recognized in those categories, please check out the story on the district website.

Two more Woodland Hills seniors will pursue their sports in college after signing their National Letters of Intent today during a signing ceremony at the high school.
Asia Fowler, a trailblazer in girls wrestling, will wrestle at University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. Asia made history as the first female wrestler from Woodland Hills to medal in the WPIAL and PIAA championships as girls wrestling became a sanctioned sport in the state for the first time this year.
Andre Smith, a leader on and off the field for the Wolverines' football, will continue his football career at Clarion University. Andre was a dynamic playmaker at linebacker for the Wolverines and the unquestioned leader of the team this past season.

Sunday was senior recognition day for the Woodland Hills Girls Flag Football team. Congratulations to our seniors!
They helped the Wolverines wrap up the regular season with a perfect day, as Woodland Hills won all three contests on Sunday. That sets them up to compete in the championship games on Sunday, May 19 at Carnegie Mellon University.
Every senior day is special, but it's going to be hard to top the moment the Wolverines' baseball team enjoyed today against Steel Valley.
Not only did Woodland Hills celebrate its three seniors, but the Wolverines topped Steel Valley 6-4 to snap a 57-game losing skid.
The streak is over.
The last time Woodland Hills won a baseball game was against Carrick on March 26, 2021.
Congratulations to not only the three seniors who were honored before the game, but to the entire team for showcasing their grit and perseverance. Let's start a different streak, now!
