A decade ago, the Special Olympics “flame of hope” was extinguished at a closing ceremony in Croke Park, to mark the end of the World Summer Games 2003. After playing Host Town to Team Iceland and “Sharing the Feeling” many of the Newry Volunteers promised on that day to continue that feeling and establish clubs for athletes with learning disabilities. This promise was realised and hence the rise

in clubs in Newry & Mourne. The Newry City Special Olympics club started with football as their main sport and in the past 3 years, we have added bowling as a second sport. We currently have 24 athletes, ranging between 16 and 63 years of age. The football athletes, both male and female, train every Saturday, at Newry City AFC Showground’s between 11:30 and 12:45. The bowlers train in Sheepbridge Inn on Monday evening from 7:15 – 9:15pm. Newry City Afc swimming club has 22 athletes on their books, ranging in age from 6 to 63 years. The club trains on a Friday evening at Newry swimming pool, The Meadow, with three extra training sessions on the lead up to competitions. Our Gymnastics Club, commenced in October 2012 and presently has four athletes. The club trains on a Saturday in Newry Sports Centre from 3- 4pm. Despite their various disabilities, each athlete brings their unique characteristics and talents to their various sports. Their enthusiasm and their willingness to learn is second to none and we are very proud of each and everyone. All of the clubs are well structured. We have great support from dedicated coaches and volunteers without whom we would be unable operate and to whom we are extremely grateful. We aim to cater for all our athletes needs and new members are always welcome. It is a great opportunity for our athletes to interact with other people, build new friendships, learn new skills and keep fit. There are currently two other Special Olympic Clubs operating independently in the Newry & Mourne area. Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions to more than 4 million athletes in 170 countries. Special Olympics competition structure is in a four year cycle, starting at Area events, through to Regional events, on to the Ireland games culminating in the World Summer Special Olympics games. We are currently finishing the second year of this cycle. Many of our athletes competed at Regional Events throughout the year. The next stage, for those who have qualified, will be the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick in June 2014. We would like to wish all those athletes the very best of luck in the selection process for these games. The next World Games will be the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, California from July 24 to August 2, 2015. All these clubs would not exist without funding and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Big O’ for his help and support in all our fundraising activities. He has been a constant tower of support and we very much appreciate all he does for the clubs. Last, but by no means least, a special thank you to all our sponsors, of which there are many. In a sensational display of skill and determination, Team Ireland's men's division 1 football team triumphed in two back-to-back matches, cementing their place in the World Games final.
Their first game against Poland showcased their dominance as they emerged victorious with an impressive 6-0 win.
Undeterred by the challenge, the team faced Morocco next, coming from a goal down to clinch a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
The electrifying atmosphere, coupled with overwhelming support from the crowd, further fuelled their remarkable performance. With this historic achievement, a Team Ireland men's football team has reached the final for the first time in their history, promising an exhilarating showdown on Saturday.

Newry Special Olympics Club are proud to announce that James Meenan is representing Ireland playing football in the upcoming games in Germany. James has been a member of our club for almost 10 years and lives and breathes football. His ambition has been to play for Ireland and when the news came through there were tears of joy. His dad Liam Cunningham, a volunteer for our club, has encouraged and supported James on his journey. Pictures below are Darren King (Newry City Football Captain) congratulating and offering a few tips to James and a picture of James and his family.
