Women who have inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 are at a higher risk to develop breast cancers at younger ages than people who do not have these mutations. A recent study estimated that about 72% of women who inherit the BRCA1 mutation and about 69% of women who inherit the BRCA2 mutation will develop breast cancer.
There is a higher prevalence of BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene mutation among women of the Ashkenazi Jewish faith, as well as other ethnic groups in the United States such as African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and non Hispanic white.
