The Traveling Tail
Advice on how to travel with a large dog along with tales of our adventures around the world.
Our Story
Hi there and welcome to The Traveling Tail! I’m Caroline, an adventure seeker and world traveler. Originally from the United States, I have spent the last several years studying and working internationally in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. While my love for travel has dictated most of my life, so has my love for dogs which leads me to Milo.
Milo is my 5-year old North African street dog. I found him alone on the streets of Tunis as a tiny puppy and decided almost instantly that I would keep him. Unfortunately, planning on how I was going to keep him did not come instantly, and thus began our journey of dog passports, health certificates, microchips, approved crates, airplanes, and everything else that comes with flying a dog internationally. We have traveled to and from Tunisia, the United States, Uganda and South Africa which is where we now reside with my husband Brett who we picked up along the way :)
My website, www.thetravelingtail.com is a place to share our adventures as well as be a resource for those wanting to move their dog internationally. Milo is not a service or emotional support dog and he is in no way small. When I was looking at moving him from the United States to Uganda, I struggled to find information on how to move a large dog overseas. When we moved from Tunisia he was still a puppy and therefore easier to transport. By this point at almost 3 years old and double the size I faced a challenge. I searched and searched online for any kind of testimony from someone who had flown a big dog overseas but only found information about moving small dogs or emotional support dogs around Europe.
All in all I have moved Milo myself and hired companies to move him for me. In some countries customs regulations can be tricky and complicated and in those cases it is usually best to hire a professional to ensure mistakes won’t be made. I hope my website provides you with the resources I was always looking for, laying out the pros and cons of moving your dog yourself versus hiring a company, and most importantly showing that moving your big dog overseas is not just possible but well worth it. I know Milo agrees with me.
