often rely on saws for cutting open roofs for ventilation and padlocks during forcible entry. It is extremely important that we don’t always rely on power tools. If the saw’s start cords have snapped or pulled out of the saw’s housing, the saw is now useless. We must know how to use our hand tools to accomplish the mission at hand. Using the back of an ax on the roof can work just as well as using the blade. When the blunt end strikes the roof decking alongside the roof joist, the tool will crack and break open the roof sheathing below. The handle of the ax also prevents it from burying deeper into the roofing material. If the ax gets buried deeper into the roof or sheathing when using either side, a firefighter can place the tip of the boot under the handle near the blade and then push down on the handle. The boot acts like a fulcrum and releases the ax head from the roof.
