Conngratulations to Puseletso Motsemedi!
For the month of July 2024, in memory of the 67 years Nelson Mandela fought for social justice, we asked our continent to stand for something - through words. We asked you to share a social issue that mattered to you, to prompt awareness and action in making a difference. Our winner Puseletso wrote a moving essay titled ‘ Four Rooms of Abuse’, bringing attention to abuse in all its forms, through several generations.
Congratulations Puseletso, your work made a difference to us and we look forward to all our readers appreciating your talent by reading your essay [attached to post].

Help us capture 67 minutes of literary activism that needs to be seen and heard. BOOK REVIEW: being a diplomat and living in another country forces you to get to understand the culture, history, economy and politics. And what better way to celebrate that experience than through writing children's books!!
Ambassador Ruby Marks is a feminist and career diplomat, and has written two children's books about the countries where she served - Sri Lanka and now Benin.
Her first "Tell us our story, Grandma" (2020) is about the slave trade, but the lesser known story of African slaves taken to the East, in particular Sri Lanka.
""Girls, We Can!" (2023) is set in Benin, and through the eyes of a young girl, explores the story of the Agodjie, the women warriors of the Dahomey Empire.
Cultural diplomacy is an important part of the work of diplomats, and these two beautifully illustrated and written books certainly hit the mark. It also contributes to the growing body of children's and YA books, telling African stories by African writers.
Looking forward to more!!

12 years and one day. An evolving tale of many seasons. The book launch for Daughters was a fundraiser for the Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre. When it comes to gender violence, we have come a long way, we have far to go.
Comedy Author Book Review: 'Born a Crime' by Trevor Noah. In the spirit of comedy month April, we start by showcasing Africa's most successful comedian. His novel reads like a stand up comedy set that takes you on a autobiographical whirlwind of laughs, documenting Trevor's upbringing as a mixed race child in post apartheid South Africa. His ability to find humour in his struggles and triumph both with resilience and a smile reminds us all to not take ourselves too seriously, and make time to laugh in the face of adversity. Trevor Noah thank you, a smile can be a real game-changer.
