Almost every child will go through the "neophobic stage," a normal developmental stage that usually occurs around two years of age.

During our ancestor's time, foods were not packaged with the list of ingredients and expiry dates like what we have nowadays. Our ancestors relied on the colours, smells, tastes, and textures to determine whether the food is edible or dangerous. Hence, the "neophobic stage" is believed to be an evolutionary response from identifying harmful food.

Although "neophobia" means the fear of new food, children may also refuse familiar food that they previously accepted during this developmental stage. It generally takes 10-15, sometimes 20 exposures, before a child eventually accepts the refused food.

Exposure to food can also be done beyond meal times, such as allowing messy play with food, cooking, or reading stories about food.

In addition, parents should never pressure their children to taste new food if they are not ready to do so. If a child eventually accepts the food, shower him or her with praises.

Do take note that some children may develop extreme food refusal which requires professional help. Here are the signs.
