Hilling up around the seedlings. Straw, and chips. Weeds die back more efficiently with this combination. Straw improves soil texture faster, and grasses pull easier. Chips alone, have the tendency to "bunch-up" with root clusters of penetrating "weeds". Making it harder to pull "weeds" out. A complete subterrestrial ecosystem thrives below the garden "mulch". Mulch is not just for: keeping the weeds out, holding the moisture in, or keeping the sun out to prevent the resurgence of "weeds". Mulch is a "casing substrate" for biological activity. On this part of the planet, "there are no "weeds", only thriving biological life.
