A Note from the Chair

Hello everyone! If you’ve stumbled across this message, chances are you are one of the many members of the Deerfield community with a keen interest in the DPS109 school board. It’s wonderful people are seeking information and looking to be part of the process.

It is very clear that parents and residents of Deerfield desire to have their voices heard and be part of the process more than ever. A full 1/3 of the caucus is brand new, joining another 1/3 that is returning for their second term. And that is on the heels of one of the largest voter turnouts in recent years.

To this end, the Caucus plays a key role in maintaining the quality of our K–8 schools. As a community-based organization, it reflects who we are in Deerfield—be it parents with children currently in the district’s elementary or middle schools, those with children in high school, college, or beyond, or residents who simply have an abiding interest in K-8 education. No matter our backgrounds, we all serve together, and our individual experiences coalesce into immensely informative, enriching, and passionate conversations across the 15-month Caucus process. The respect caucus members have always shown each other, despite varying views, is a great example of how civic discourse should be.

The D109 School Board Caucus is non-partisan. And collectively, we do not take a stand on any one issue. We seek a balance of ALL stakeholders in the community. That being said, Caucus members are not asked to put their own personal feelings aside but are asked to keep an open mind and treat everyone’s opinions with respect. These principles are the bedrock of the caucus, and why I am so proud to be part of it.

On the personal front, my wife Randi and I moved here in early 2010. We have two children, one at Caruso and one who entered DHS this year. My father was a teacher, principal, and educational consultant, so growing up and well into adulthood, engagement in our schools and the district were always priorities for our family.

I look forward to participating in the upcoming 2022–23 Caucus and appreciate the trust our members have placed in me to chair it. Our work undergirds one of our community’s greatest assets, our public K–8 schools, and all our members are excited to get to work and help identify the best possible school board candidates to serve our unique and special community.

David Mutnick
Chair 2022-2023

Wishing all of our DPS 109 Students, Teachers, Administrators and Support Staff a Happy First Day of School 2022-2023!

Request to Join Caucus 06/03/2022

The DPS 109 Caucus is seeking new members and we invite our community to apply.

As part of our community for more than 30 years, the District 109 School Board Caucus aims to:

• encourage interested citizens to present themselves for open seats
• to undertake a fair and comprehensive process of candidate endorsement, and
• to publicize its endorsed candidates.

The 2022-23 term is just beginning and will end in April 2023. There will be five meetings during that time.

The Caucus includes 24 members, plus two alternate members, who come from many different backgrounds. Please learn more about our Caucus here. https://www.dps109caucus.org/caucus

The 24 Caucus Members serve and speak for the best interests of School District 109, and not as a representative of any specific school, person, organization, or geographical area within District 109. Many members are parents with children in 109 schools, but we also welcome community members without children in the schools.

We are hopeful that you will consider applying for an opportunity to participate in the DPS109 Caucus. Please apply at our DPS109 Caucus website by providing requested information, on this page.

After years of uncontested elections, 8 candidates put their blood, sweat, and tears into volunteering for a 4-year, unpaid commitment to Deerfield Schools. Choice is always a good thing in elections.

Deerfield School District 109 Caucus congratulates Sari Montgomery for Deerfield School District 109 School Board and Andrew Morrison on being re-elected, and congratulates Kelly Jakymiw for District 109 Board of Education and Maureen Wener for Deerfield School Board District 109 on their new positions on the Board.

We thank all the candidates for their commitment to our community.
