The Plaza Cinema, which opened in 1936, was renamed the Odeon after the neighbouring Odeon Cinema closed in 1975. Next door, the Hippodrome Theatre was opened in 1938 on the site of the former Opera House, which was destroyed by fire in 1936. The Odeon closed in October 1990 and was demolished in 1997, while the former Hippodrome was used as a bingo hall from the 1970s until 2009.
