A Tribute to Brod Chito Roda
By Founder Boboy Mendoza
I first met Chito in late 1969, shortly after we established our first Frat House in a rented apartment in Detroit Street, Cubao. Although no one was permanently staying there, we usually had drinking sessions while unwinding from the rigors of college life. Inevitably, a few of us would spend the night there, spent, tired or burned out.
The apartment was a two bedroom unit with one kitchen and bathroom in the ground floor. Our artistic brothers painted and adorned the walls with psychedelic images and one of the bedrooms was filled with sexy photos taken from whatever sources were available at the time, including posters of movie stars in varying states of undress. A few mattresses, cushions and assorted furniture littered the apartment, ostensibly taken surreptitiously from the houses of the brods and our first batch of sisses, then called the Aphrodites.
A tea party was held on one of those weekends. Afterwards, when the sisses had gone or been taken home, the party quickly turned into a drinking session. As we were young and foolish, many of us drank more than we could handle. In addition to the bathroom, the kitchen sink and floors became resting places for the resultant vomit. Chito and a few others spent the night there, and the next morning, a couple of us agreed to meet there in order to clean the mess. To our very pleasant surprise, Chito, who was just a newly-minted brod, had already accomplished the clean-up that the place reeked of Lysol and was sparkling clean. Sabi niya kasi, hindi niya matiis yung baho at dumi.
Everyone in the frat knows of the prowess of Chito in recruiting new brods. Not as many know that he was a gifted guitarist who went out of his way to teach whoever wanted to study. Both Benny Goco and I were eager students, and the frat office at the 4th floor of Vinzon’s Hall turned into a music school. Benny was already an intermediate classical guitarist, having taken a couple of months’ training under Professor Pellicer of the College of Music, and wanted to perfect his Recuerdos dela Alhambra and Leyenda under the tutelage of Chito. Unfortunately, my skills as a guitarist were at the time limited to the standard C A D G chords used in folk songs. And so, Chito had more than his hands full in training both my right and left fingers in the correct classical guitar techniques. I admired his patience and persistence even when I felt like giving up at times because my fingers simply refused to cooperate in creating music on his expensive Kawaii guitar. It paid off because in a couple of months, I was finally able to play the basic Romansa de un Amor without too many errors.
Outside of Vinzon’s Hall, members of the frat would congregate in the AS Steps in-between classes or in the College of Music where it felt like Chito had already recruited most of the students there into the frat. When I finally had entered the Institute of Mass Communication, Chito and I saw much more of each other, with our buildings just beside each other and our common cafeteria the UP Food Service Stand 17 just behind our buildings. He introduced me to the people there, including the UP Concert Chorus, where many brods were members. Although I wasn’t formally a member of the Chorus, I attended many rehearsals and assisted in backstage activities, thanks to Chito. During their 10th anniversary presentation of Mass by Leonard Bernstein at the Meralco Theater, martial law was declared by Marcos. The musicale was halted midstream by a Metrocom officer informing the full-house audience of Proclamation 1081. After a ten-minute recess, Choir Director Rey Paguio decided to finish the performance, and the audience who mostly stayed put, heartily applauded the announcement and returned to their seats.
After the show, we felt stranded in the theater, as there were no public conveyances, thanks to the Metrocom. As there weren’t enough cars to accommodate everyone, we overloaded our vehicles and agreed to drive to Abelardo Hall. More than ten people crammed themselves into my Beetle, among them Chito and Rey Paguio. We drove slowly via Katipunan as we were told that there was an ongoing firefight at the Iglesia ni Kristo basilica in Commonwealth. Many of us eventually spent the night inside the Kamia Residence Hall, as we weren’t allowed to enter the College of Music complex by government soldiers.
After I graduated, I learned that Chito moved to UE to finish a college degree in business administration. Although we hardly saw each other during that period, we kept in touch via reunions and anniversaries involving brods. In one of those reunions in 1981, he asked me if I had some employment opportunities for him. At the time, my friends and I had formed a small management consultancy business, and after conferring with my partners, we decided to hire Chito as one of our staffers. We were together for a couple of years in that enterprise until the business was closed because of the downturn in economic activity in the aftermath of the Ninoy Aquino assassination.
During that time, we became more than brothers. I was his adviser and confidant when he found out he had advanced Type-1 diabetes, with life-threatening complications and significant lifestyle changes. He was, in turn, my confidant with my personal and professional challenges, and gave me many important insights and advice to help in decision-making. We went to many places together, among them Tagaytay, Batangas, Hundred Islands, Baguio, Mt. Data and Puerto Galera. He happily volunteered the free services of his Adventist Church choir in my wedding. In turn, my eldest son was Covenant Bearer in his wedding.
Over the decades, our special bond withstood the rigors of raising our respective families and providing for them. Everytime we’d see each other, it was as if we’d only been apart for a day, even if there were times we wouldn’t see each other for years.
My wife Queenie and our sons EC and Billy were greatly saddened when they heard of your passing Chito. I, in turn, lost more than a brother. You are now in a much better place, where pain and suffering no longer exist. We will all meet again in that distant future and until that time, we wish you Godspeed and a safe journey to the afterlife. Until then, dear Brother Chito, please watch over us and help keep us safe.
Congratulations Bossing!💚❤️💙
