Obituary for Edith M. (Koontz) Fischer | Akers Funeral Home Share memories & support the family
It is with sadness that we report the death of PDG Amos Shatzer. He along with PID LeGrand Perce have left a hole in the hearts of many fellow lions, not just in District 14L but across Lions International worldwide. May their memories be eternal.
Amos R. Shatzer, 81, of Mount Union, and formerly of Lewistown, passed away on Friday October 27, 2023 at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.
Born November 28, 1941 in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Amos R. Shatzer, Sr., and Jeanette (Winder) Shatzer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kay (Snyder) Shatzer, whom he married on October 14, 1995, his daughter, Leslie Shatzer-Hicks and husband John, of Louisville, Kentucky, a grandson, Jonathan S. Hicks, and great-grandson, Ash Hicks.
Amos was employed as a salesman at Standard Steel for over 30 years, and later worked in property management alongside his wife in the mid-west for 15 years.
Amos joined Lions Clubs International in 1973. During his 50+ years as a Lion, Amos has held almost every position available including Club President and District Governor, the 2 highest positions in the club and district, respectively. Amos has always been dedicated to helping others and he made it a point to have served as club and district level Service Coordinator and received the PA Counsellors Award for Outstanding service in June 2023. He has received numerous awards including The International Presidential Award in 2014, Membership Key and Membership Advancement Key for recruiting and sponsoring 6 new members to join Lions Clubs International. He was awarded a Carl Shoemaker Award for his dedication to PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp. He is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, having received his 3 Diamond pin in 2009. His dedication to Lions was never more apparent than last year when he stepped up to lead the new club forming at Beacon Lodge as the Branch President, a position he still held at the time of his death. As a Lion, Amos was also heavily involved with the Lions International Trading Pin Club (LITPC) and the Pin Trading Club of Pennsylvania (PTCP), where he served in the past as vice president, president, secretary and was currently the organizations Pin Chairman. Through LITPC and PTCP, he was known by pin traders in many countries as the “Go To Guy” in Pennsylvania for Lions pins.
He was an avid Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football fan, and a collector of trains. Earlier in life, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Kay all over the world, including trips outside of the country, and a train ride from east to west coast.
At the deceased’s wishes there will be no public visitation and a private interment at St. Mark’s Community Cemetery in Lewistown, PA.
A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Spring 2024, to be held at PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, details will be released at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to King-Barr Funeral Home LLC, 120 Logan Street, Lewistown.
Memorial contributions in Amos’ memory are respectfully encouraged to: PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, 114 PA-103 South, Mt Union, PA 17066.
