January 10 Physiology of Addiction: This session explores common neurobiological patterns underlying chemical and behavioral addictions.
January 17 Stages of Recovery and PAWS: Tonight we look at recovery as a process with stages that most individuals with a substance use disorder will go through on the road to recovery. We will discuss how to recognize signs of a return to use.
January 24 Medication for Alcohol & Opioid Use Disorders: This session reviews medications available for the treatment of alcohol and opioid use disorders.

"The problem in addiction is not a lack of "free will" but a lack of "free won't". When the frontal cortex is damaged the ability to say "No! This behavior isn't appropriate right now!" is compromised. The frontal cortex is responsible for functions such as impulse control and "free will" It is essentially our "brake system". If you are driving you may not want to hit someone but if there are no brakes how do you stop the car?”

Using Motivational Interviewing to change the conversation with your loved one: OARS for the family system.
Motivational Interviewing is a style of guided communication that has a particular emphasis on the language of change and evoking the family member’s own reasons for change. Learning a few simple techniques can transform those “argument re-runs” into new and effective conversations.
