Geeks' Cant
Three loveable chuckleheads bring you takes and goodies from every corner of the geek universe. Geeks’ Cant - the home of RPG jargon and general tomfoolery.
Our crew is made up of a core of fellow gamers and DMs that have met and bonded on the battlefields of convention Dungeon Mastering. From newbs to "grognards", we have it covered.
It's that time of year and I am back at Gen Con.
If you're here, come say Hi at the Elderwood Academy booth ( #1549).
Hey Facebook friends. I am not sending out friend requests. If you get one, it's not me.
What a day, a week, a month, heck... the past couple of years it has been.
As of 11:11 am this morning, I am no longer employed with World of Game Design. Not my favorite thing to have manifested, but that's the way the dice roll.
I type those words with mixed emotions.
To say it has been a wild ride would be an incredible understatement, to say the least.
The people I have met, relationships that have developed, the creators I have worked with, the projects I have been a part of, the connections I have made, and the skills and talents that I have developed have all been great and eye opening!
I don't know what the future has in store for me, but this won't be the last the gaming industry will be seeing or hearing from me. I'm not sure where I will land, but you can bet it will be very dramatic and in a three-point superhero stance!
Play great games, and if you know, you know.
~Uncle Troy
I haven't done one of these in a while, but I feel compelled to give everyone a fair warning...
I went to see the movie Monkey Man last night. The best parts of the movie were the teaser trailers and my pretzel bites.
If you have issues with motion sickness or don't like this right up in your face, definitely steer clear of this movie. The only 2 camera techniques the director (and star of the movie) knows is close up and continuously move the camera in nonsensical patterns. 5 minutes into the movie I wanted to yell at it to get out of my face. To understand how the movie is shot, get 5 inches away from everything you do or look at for the next 2 hours while randomly bobbling your head around. There are only maybe 5 scenes in the entire movie that are shot from a normal range and none of them last long enough to provide any relief.
The writer (who is also the director and star) filled the script with almost every revenge action movie trope you can think of. Unfortunately, even with a 2 hour runtime, none of them have a chance to payoff with any satisfaction.
It's like what if your average 12 year old wrote a story and tried to combine John Wick, Bloodsport, Rocky, Enter the Dragon, Taken, Man on Fire, and then sprinkled in political and religious conflicts for added flavor and confusion.
I guess I a little surprised there weren't aliens or time travel thrown in somehow.
I don't know that I've ever walked out of a movie due to how bad it is. After the first 10 minutes, I wanted to leave. The trailers were over and my pretzel bites gone. But I stayed. Why? I have no idea.
Brad Trimble, this one is your fault.
Story time
Well Gary Con, it was another awesome convention. Til next year!
Gary Con... Last day.
What an amazing trip.
Day 2 of Gary Con!
Yesterday was a roller-coaster that ended absolutely AMAZING! It's not often that the highlight of a convention happens on the first day. I'll save that story for later.
Day 1!
Good morning Gary Con!

Is there one system that rules them all?? Can a company's house system work for all of their IPs? What if they change it too much? When does the system stop being the system?
Are you confused yet? Well you can bet the knuckleheads will be, too.
