Roman's Reign.....

The longest reigning World Champion in "modern" wrestling history Roman Reigns left WWE Crown Jewel with his impressive reign in tact.....

It surely is an impressive run on top that hasn't been seen since the lofty days of Hulkamania. The striking difference between Joe Anoai's run on top compared to the select few who surpass him in length as champion is that he has achieved this feat as a heel....

In the long history of WWWF/WWF/WWE it has during its most successful periods used babyface figure heads. In the 1960's , 70's and 80's that meant that the digest drawing babyface would carry the World Title and headline cards for literal years. This changed in the late 90s during the Attitude era when competition from WCW forced WWF to abandon the tried and tested method for a more unpredictable ratings driven booking theology.

Before the crash TV style changed the rules the early days of WWWF were ruled by babyface Italian hero Bruno Sammaratino who over two reigns held the World Title for over 11 years, after Bruno there was Bon Backlund who had a 7 year run as world champion.....TV and culture switched massively in the 80s as Vince McMahon jr. Took over from his father and expanded nation wide, but even then Hulk Hogans lucrative first reign lasted over 3 years, since then no one has come close to these lengths, .....

Until Roman Reigns.....however when Bruno, Backlund and Hogan constantly prevailed, they were vanquishing hated heel challengers and therefore sending the paying audience home happy......a long reigning heel champion does the exact opposite..

As welcome as an old school long reign has been and as much as it has repaired the prestige of the championship, the fact that Roman Reigns is a "bad guy" could be considered counter productive. It has largely been a huge success, however there is a danger that fans could become jaded with constantly seeing their heroes come up short....this of course can also damage a hot babyface star who can have his rise cut short with a defeat right at the moment a win could have catapulted him to new heights.

The question must be asked....have WWE gone too long with this historic reign? Meaning have they missed the best possible pay off? Many believe Cody Rhodes "finishing the story" at this year's Wrestlemania would have been perfect......WWE chose to keep the gold on Roman Reigns....

If when Reigns finally drops the title it is remembered as a true star making unforgettable moment I will happily stand corrected, but I personally believe a Cody win at Mania was the best possible pay off. Even if Cody wins it this year I don't believe it means as much as it could have last year.....and if it's not Cody who ends it I truly can't imagine anyone else getting that spot that would feel worthy of it in the majority of fans eyes.

Roman Reigns' run has now reached such legendary status that if the man who ends it doesn't have the 100% support of the audience it will be considered a let down......I'm not sure anyone including Cody can achieve that level of support that he did last year....

And if WWE think the same, then they may decide to keep the belt on Reigns even longer.....and if they do....when, where and who will ever truly be on that level to finally pin the Tribal Chiefs shoulders to the mat?

For a company who built there reputation on sending the fans home happy and famously gave a legacy of babyface figureheads, the last 3 years have been atypical to say the least.....

One day a hero will be chosen to defeat "the head of the table"....the question is...when he does will the crown have become to heavy to wear???

Tom Budgen aka Malakai Black who was granted his release from AEW earlier this month has released a full statement on the situation:

"Firstly thank you all for your messages, know they are being read and appreciated. With all the turmoil going on in the landscape of Professional Wrestling I took the time to think of my words but also needed to wait until conversations between mine and AEWโ€™s camp had come to a conclusion.

Firstly, I dislike reading parts of my private conversations between myself and AEW in regards to my mental well being on the internet, These conversations were private and not meant to be shared with the public. As by now most people realize I am a very private person and do not feel the need to have stuff like this out on the internet. If youโ€™ve been following me longer than a cup of coffee youโ€™re aware Iโ€™ve spoken about them prior but would like to be the one deciding when this finds itโ€™s way to the public and not through someone elseโ€™s mouth, as with anything through the lips of someone else: that story gets distorted.

Secondly, to be in line with the above, they also need context:

I did indeed ask for my release, the last 2 years of my life have lended to a lot of setbacks. Both me and my wife have been affected by uncontrollable actions from the outside that resulted in loss of life, medical setbacks, career jeopardizing, the su***de of a close friend and a close family member almost losing their life, then experiencing an injury that I was sure was the end of my career. I spend every week going through several sessions of rehab, dry needling and therapy just to be able to walk and compete. Now this being the tip of the iceberg and with the combination of the promises in my professional field that were not upheld which resulted as a combination of all of these to a complete demoralization of life and career. This decision had been in my mind for the past six months.

Itโ€™s hard to really put a finger and say โ€œthis was the moment it all went wrong.โ€ But I can tell you after many years that I have learned from a rational point of view to see when I need to hit the breaks; which is what this is.

Perhaps once my mind settles on certain things and processes the last 2 years a bit better I will convey(via a different platform than written out) what the exacts were that happened, and have a more informed conversation about them.

For now know that I am good, and am taking, for the first time in 22 years, a few months to recalibrate the last 2 decades of my life.

Lastly, I have read a few narratives online in regards to my โ€œreleaseโ€, mental health and my personal life that I can summarize swiftly; if it didnโ€™t come from me, it didnโ€™t happen. Stuff about conditional releases, stuff in my marriage or using said mental health to leverage the other when as I said before that part wasnโ€™t even going to be part of the public conversation are false. My marriage is fine, I am fine. It is just time to make sure those things stay that way.

Once again, I appreciate your support and we will see each other soon enough.

23-year-old Ben Evans of Benllech recently captured his first championship title of his wrestling career.

In-front of a Holyhead crowd, Ben Evans pinned Jack Thorn to become the new Fusion Pro Wrestling Hardcore Champion.

Fusion Pro Wrestling are a wrestling promotion formed over 10 years ago, based in Llandudno. They travel all over Wales, entertaining hundreds, whilst training the next generation of Welsh wrestling talent.

He began training at the age of 13 with Rhyl based Britannia Wrestling Promotions and was trained by Drew Parker and The Babyfaced Pitbull.

Ben's love for wrestling began at the age of 4, watching the likes of The Rock, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels. The amazing storytelling and athleticism shown by the wrestlers is what hooked Ben and ever since has dreamt of one day becoming a pro-wrestler.

Inspired by the likes of Eddie Guerrero, Rob Van Dam and CM Punk, Ben hopes that this title will be the first of many. We spoke with Ben about how his journey started, what it was like to win the title and his ambitions for the future, he said:

"Iโ€™ve always been interested in wrestling since I can remember my earliest memories from watching wrestling was about age 4. I remember watching people like Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, The Rock and just being completely drawn into the stories and the athletic side of it. In terms of wrestlers who really inspired me to become a wrestler where people like Eddie Guerrero, Rob Van Dam and CM Punk."

"I remember at the age of about 13 I knew thatโ€™s what I wanted to do so I begged my parents to let me give it a go and theyโ€™ve told me years after they assumed it would be a one time and done thing but no the second I got to try it for myself I was hooked."

"If I was to describe my wrestling style I would say itโ€™s technical and high flying. The technical side inspired by great British wrestlers of the past and the high flying aspect from the Lucha Libre style from Mexico but also inspired by the hard hitting Strong Style of Japan so a good mix of styles."

"When I won the Fusion Pro Hardcore Championship it was a fantastic feeling, it felt like a lot of the hard work that Iโ€™d put in over the years grafting had paid off, so it was an honour to also lift the championship in front of my friends and family and the people of Anglesey!"

"My advice to anyone aspiring to want to get involved in wrestling would be to go for it, if you really want to give it a go then Iโ€™d highly recommend it. But it wonโ€™t be easy, thereโ€™s a lot of hardships that go with it and you have to have a lot of commitment to your craft for sure. Thereโ€™s a lot more to it than meets the eye!"

"As far as ambitions for the future, I just want to keep carving my name out there on the British wrestling scene, getting out there in front of as many people and getting on as many shows as I can. While also hopefully in the future getting the opportunity to wrestle in other countries outside of the UK would be fantastic."

If you'd be interested in catching Ben and the rest of the Britannia Wrestling Promotions roster, details for the next show are shown below:

Drew McIntyre not winning the straps in front of a UK crowd is a huge missed opportunity. Reminds me of the Lex Luger countout win at SummerSlam 94. Drew will never be as over as he was tonight and a future win will never mean as much as this one would have. I get not wanting to end Roman's historic reign while huge match with The Rock is still a possibility but could they not have at least booked a Dusty finish and have Drew's hand raised in the night and send the fans home happy and then take the belt off him with a technicality on Monday night?
