The Earthquake of 1687 and the Aftermath within Peruvian Culture and Devotion
On October 20, 1687, a devastating earthquake destroyed the capital of Peru's Viceroyalty and marked the beginning of the procession of the Lord of Miracles. Centuries of traditions around this devotional figure have marked Peruvian culture in different religious manifestations. In this lecture Dr. Judith Mansilla, of the FIU History Department, will discuss different expressions that have been cultivated in the society of Lima.
Join TAK in our last Third Thursday Coffee Hour of the semester. Dr. Amit Ranjan, Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence Fellow, will be lecturing on Dara Shikoh and his Syncretic Utopia. We are so excited to hear his talk this Thursday Nov 18, 2021 on Zoom!
TAK present's the September 2021 coffee hour: Creating Ottoman Islam by Dr. Carlos Grenier. Dr. Carlos Grenier explores the religious outlook of Muslims of the early Ottoman Empire, whose faith would go on to define orthodox Sunni Islam. By studying the Yazicioglus, authors of popular religious textbooks in vernacular Turkish, he finds that the development of Ottoman Islam was a bottom-up process, conditioned by the environment of the Eastern Mediterranean frontier. Using their limited library and connections, the Yazicioglus tried to create a civic faith for their Turkish-speaking audience of converts and ordinary townspeople. Please join us in DM258 at 1 o'clock. Coffee and pastelitos will be provided. For those not on campus or cannot physically join us, please join us on zoom!
