Story in the Atlantic The 2015 Atlantic Regional was a matchup of champions not to be missed: 2014 South East Regional champ Emily Bridgers faced 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games winner...
Setting goals and making them a reality! It's beautiful to have both moments captured so perfectly: inception and actualization. Congrats !
“Everybody decided we were going to try to do this as a team, sacrifice all of our personal goals for the greater good of the team and work together,” said Terminus’ Steve Hoover. “This is the better part of a year of coming together and making it happen.”

Pursuing Change
“It's not hard to decide what you want your life to be about. What's hard, she said, is figuring out what you're willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about.”
― Shauna Niequist,
The end of the Open is often a great time to reflect on our goals. We acknowledge that everyone comes to CrossFit for different reasons. Improving health, relief of stress, improving performance, improving mobility/functionality or simply to “look better naked”; these are all valid goals for an individual to have. By it’s very nature the Open draws us together as a community into an actual measurable competition. We find ourselves naked and exposed for the world to see. We have flaws and we are not perfect, and yes some people can exercise better than we can. By being confronted with our shortcomings we are given an opportunity for growth.
I wanted to take a moment to discuss one singular point: Performance. Admit it- everyone wants to taste success in some facet of life. CrossFit can be an outlet for this. You come to the gym day in and day out to build and measure your personal progress. What happens when we don’t meet our own expectations or a particular movement or workout has shattered our own self-image? Do we take a moment to reflect on what’s really causing our performance to wane? The Open is a profound opportunity for self-introspection, and a chance to set goals for the coming year. Achieving goals related to performance and athletics does not come without sacrifice and hard work. What are you willing to sacrifice to become a better version of yourself? The nightly glasses of wine or the daily doughnut do not lend themselves to performance. Often the biggest fixes to improve performance come from changing our lifestyle choices. We are quick to place external blame for our own shortcomings. It’s much easier to assign our own faults to external forces.
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
― Marcus Aurelius
Ultimately change comes from within. We must look deep into the mirror and realize that we have control over what our performance will be like. Improving performance will not come from exercise alone. It doesn’t come from a magic pill or program. Taking a holistic approach and challenging our very lifestyles, the things we do outside the gym will have the most profound effect on how you perform! Everything you do outside the gym is brought into the gym. Your behavior shows where your true priorities are. As we close out the 2015 open, take a moment and be honest with yourself. What are your goals for the coming year? What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve those goals? It’s spring-cleaning time! Time to throw away our negative perceptions and behaviors! It will be uncomfortable, but with a little courage and determination, we can all achieve success in the coming year.
“What we call our destiny is truly our character and that character can be altered. The knowledge that we are responsible for our actions and attitudes does not need to be discouraging, because it also means that we are free to change this destiny. One is not in bo***ge to the past, which has shaped our feelings, to race, inheritance, background. All this can be altered if we have the courage to examine how it formed us. We can alter the chemistry provided we have the courage to dissect the elements.”
― Anaïs Nin

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
