Dysphagia is a disorder that is associated with a wide variety of conditions including stroke, head and neck cancer, and neurologic disorders such as dementia, ALS, Parkinson's, motor neuron disease and muscular dystrophy, to name a few.

MEET THE 2023 ICCD SPEAKERS!

Katie Decker, M.A., CCC-SLP, is the owner of Midwest Dysphagia Diagnostics, a mobile FEES company servicing the state of Iowa. Following her graduation from the University of Northern Iowa, Katie worked as a medical speech language pathologist in various settings including acute care, acute rehabilitation, outpatient, and skilled nursing. Through her experience, Katie developed a passion for helping individuals with dysphagia to improve their quality of life. With this work, she realized patients did not have access to the diagnostics they needed for effective diagnosis and treatment, sparking the creation of Midwest Dysphagia Diagnostics. Katie is also serving as the Vice President of Medical and Private Practice on the Iowa Speech Language Hearing Association board.

Katie will be presenting on Friday, April 14th from 1:00pm - 3:00pm with a session titled “Seeing is Believing: Elevate your dysphagia intervention with FEES”

Leder (2002) found that we vastly over-diagnose dysphagia and miss aspiration events when we try to diagnose and treat dysphagia with the clinical swallow evlauation only.
