INTERVIEW – DIMITRIS BUHALIS: There is no overtourism in Greece, but inadequate planning management and marketing

His view that there is no overtourism in Greece, but poor management of tourist flows, is emphatically emphasized once again by Dimitris Buhalis, Professor of Tourism Marketing and Strategy at Bournemouth University, in an interview with MONEY & TOURISM and to Mr. Constantinos St. Deriziotis, on the occasion of the noise that has been created recently around this issue.

Professor Buhalis acknowledges that many destinations in the country face many important infrastructure issues for which tourism is not to blame. On the contrary! He even underlines that there is “demonization of tourism”!

Commenting on the international tourism scene, the Greek professor notes that the landscape is blurred with the wars and the economic crisis, while pointing out the need to have a long-term strategy for tourism in Greece, with a parallel study of the competition.

Finally, commenting on the famous issue of inviting workers to cover the dozens of vacancies in tourism, Professor Buhalis asks “Attention to the invitation of foreigners”, as the experience of authentic Greek hospitality offered by Greek workers will be lost. He also calls for “…automating tasks for the benefit of the employee and ultimately the customer to whom it all ends up”.

The study examines the relationship between virtual reality (VR)-facilitated mental imagery and travellers' intention to visit a destination. A serial mediation process through travel inspiration (inspired-by and inspired-to) is proposed as a psychological mechanism able to explain the positive relationship of elaboration and quality of mental imagery with visit intentions. VR users were recruited through Prolific Academic. The findings demonstrate that VR-facilitated elaboration of mental imagery increases travel inspiration and consequently visit intention. However, the importance of mental imagery quality is much lower. The paper contributes to the literature of pre-travel VR experience by exploring the role of travel inspiration.

ALL CHANGE ALL CHANGE ... 35 years ago I set up to reduce the coercive power of Tour Operators over Mediterranean places through technology. At the time we did not have the Internet and GDSs were the only alternative distribution mechanism. With the Internet, all this changed although many hoteliers still fail to use technology strategically. In the last 10 years, the key values of Tour Operators were transportation (charter flights) and safety. Now increasingly they will be using commercial airlines for dynamic packaging while they will emerge as experience platforms. A bit too late in my opinion but what we see is the diminishment of the tour operating model and a strategic change in the ecosystem with multiple consequences. ALL CHANGE ALL CHANGE ...

European airlines are preparing for record passenger numbers this summer as people rush to book flights despite the economic gloom and high ticket prices.

Indications that consumers are prioritising travel have spurred airlines to increase flights over summer: European airlines will have 817.5mn seats available between April and October, according to travel data company OAG, the highest number on record.

Average air fares across Europe were between 20 and 30 per cent higher over summer 2023 compared with 2019, according to EU data published in October.

EasyJet said it had been filling two planes a minute during its busiest booking periods since the start of this year, while Ryanair said this week that bookings were about 5 per cent higher than at the same time last year, and prices were up “by a low single-digit percentage”.
