Fall allergy symptoms and COVID-19 symptoms can overlap, such as cough and shortness of breath. During this time it is important to understand what the differences are between fall allergies and COVID-19 and when it is time to see a doctor. What are some differences?

• COVID-19 can cause a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher and allergies do not cause a fever
• COVID-19 can spread from person to person while allergies can not
It is also important to try to manage your fall allergies as best as you can. Here are some tips to help reduce your allergy symptoms:
• Pre-medicate with an antihistamine and/or corticosteroid nasal spray 2 hours prior to allergen exposure. For eye allergies, use eye drops as needed.
• Avoid pollens and fallen leaves. In late summer and early fall, levels are highest in the morning.
• Wear a mask when raking leaves and doing outdoor activities.
• Monitor pollen and mold counts. Airborne pollen can travel for several miles.
• Keep windows and doors shut at your home; close windows of your car while driving.
• Take a shower and change clothes when coming inside. Wash your hair and change your clothes after time outside.
• Dry laundry indoors rather than on a clothesline outdoors.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms are fall allergies or COVID-19, schedule an appointment with your doctor and ask about testing for COVID-19. Read more here: https://allergyasthmanetwork.org/news/is-it-fall-allergies-or-covid-19-how-to-tell-the-difference/

ARE FOOD ALLERGIES A DISABILITY?

You may have read comments online from a well-meaning parent sharing: "The ADA states that food allergies are a disability."

Unfortunately, the ADA doesn't say this. (Would be great if if did.)

There is a running joke that if you ask an attorney any question, even "Is the sky blue?" they'll answer: "It depends"

Often the law is nuanced. And they want to be precise.

When we're advocating for our kids at school, we want to be careful and precise with our language as well.

Words matter.

Once you say something that others know not to be true, they tend to question everything else you say.

If I tell you that 2 + 2 = 5 and that the sky is yellow, you're going to question everything else that I say,

Even today, lots of people still don't have understanding of how dangerous food allergies can be and that even a trace of an allergen can pose a risk.

They don't understand that food allergies CAN constitute a disability.

They don't understand that accommodations ARE needed to keep a child safe and in an inclusive environment.

These are things that we need to share and explain, in a respectful, step-by-step manner -- so that they are open and receptive to hearing us.

Do you have questions about getting your child safely settled at school?

After an anaphylactic reaction in kindergarten, my son had a lot of anxiety.

Thankfully, he had a 504 plan and I had a great working relationship with his teachers, administrators and the school nurse.

They were all aware of the emotional toll of a scary ambulance ride and trip to the hospital.

When he first went back to school, he'd go to the nurse several times a week worried his throat was closing.

She'd check him, then let him lie down.

She'd keep an eye on him. And he regrouped in her safe presence.

After a few minutes, he was calmer and she'd send him back to class.

She joked to me that he was one of her "Frequent flyers" but we both knew how important her reassurance was for him.

I will always be so grateful for her kindness. ❤
