Hi all,
A post from Mรฉabh
I am currently doing research into the language that is used surrounding diabetes, whether it is in healthcare, the media or within social relationships. Itโ€™s really important to understand the first-hand experiences from people living with diabetes.
If youโ€™d like to take part it's an online survey and you can find by clicking on the following link: https://ucdpsychology.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0c6WyTP28pab1Wu
This research aims to support the Irish Diabetes language matters movement and start the conversation that can inform healthcare practitioners and public policies on the preferred language surrounding diabetes! Thanks so much I really appreciate it!!

Language Related to Diabetes in Ireland: Survey Please join our effort to understand the emotional and social impact of stigmatising language on those living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in Ireland. Your insights can make a difference in shaping the future of empathetic care.

Insulin Pump & Smart Insulin Pen Back Ups.

So those of you who use pumps, do you make sure to have some insulin pens and needles in case anything happens to your insulin pump and you can't use it ?

I'm using a Smart Insulin Pen and I do get insulin pens just in case.

We just never know and it would probably happen when you least expect it.

This is an update from liz murphy on which is an and is available here on in Ireland. I've been using it for a week now and find it fantastic.

Not everyone with Type 1 wants an Insulin Pump and I'm finding this gives me personally a lot of the features a pump would. The only thing it doesn't do is give me my insulin ๐Ÿ˜ but I'm fine with that.

Some clinics have been giving people the Novo Nordisk Smart Insulin Pen to use, which isn't on LTI as yet.

The difference between them I've found is that Medtronic In Pen comes with its own App and everything is in one place. Plus it tells me how much active insulin I have.

I did have to change CGM to Medtronic G4 from Dexcom and I was worried about that but I needed have as the Medtronic G4 is as good I'm finding as Dexcom.

Like an Insulin Pump, I do carb count and it gives me a recommended dose. There are lots of features to it.

It works with certain insulins but the information is on the website. I'm using it with Fiasp. I do log my Levemir dose manually to the app as there is just one Pen for Fast Acting insulin.

It's just another option I thought some of you might be interested in, you can speak with your clinic about it. I attend UHW BTW.

A few months ago I asked my TD Mary Butler to ask how many Under 21's and over 22's got the Freestyle Libre since 1st April 2018

Some of you may be interested in these figures, I know I was. especially for Waterford.

Dublin South/ Dun Laoghaire, Longford and Carlow/Kilkenny seem to be the place's that over 22 have gotten it most.

So what do you think will happen, will they give the Freestyle Libre to all???

Today, Abbott has announced the launch of a new integrated digital solution for people with diabetes in Ireland.

Abbotts Freestyle Libre systems and Novo Nordisk's smart connected insulin pens now work together to help people manage their diabetes in a simpler and more integrated way.

This means that people with diabetes can now see their glucose and insulin data together in their FreeStyle LibreLink app with a simple scan of the smart connected pens, making it easier to see how the treatment is affecting glucose levels, and removing the guesswork of when and how much insulin to take.

Dexcom G7 Day 13 Update 4

I've done some 3 updates on using the New Dexcom G7 Sensor since I started using it.

I've written about the smaller size, it really is small and flatter in my opinion compared to the other Dexcom's I've used. This is a big plus for me.

It's a complete unit so no adding the transmitter back into it. Which I love.

The added events are something I really do like. We can now add and save a Blood Glucose and add a Note and use 140 characters in it.

Unfortunately, in 13 days I've had quite a few issues. The first one being a sensor failure 2 days in, it was unexpected as the sensor had been working fine and was providing me with numbers that were the closest to a blood prick, I've ever had even during the 1st 24 hours. In the past I'd noticed could be out a little.

The range (as in keeping it close to you) has changed as well it seems I've found, the range on the G7 is not as good as the G6, my phone is now constantly with me, even if I'm moving around the house and I don't live in a mansion.

Day 6 on my 2nd sensor I noticed it was starting to lift, I'd used the over patch that's supplied with it when I'd 1st put it on. I called Dexcom to ask for some spare over patches but they do not supply extra over patches I was told but they did say they would send me a replacement sensor, which I'd got within 24 hrs. As the original sensor was still working and didn't seem to be coming off, I left it on.

I'd also noticed at day 5/6 on sensor 2, I was getting sensor error's even though its next to me. It drops signal and does not come back for the 30 mins as suggested.

I seem to be doing more finger pricks as I'm losing confidence in it and as I don't have the best Hypo/Hyper warnings, I want to check the readings are correct when it does come back. I'm finding the readings are out sometimes. I don't normally calibrate but unfortunately, I had to as the readings were so far out.

Yesterday day 8 with my 2nd sensor, the sensor died yet again. So thankfully I had a spare to replace it with. This time, I've not used the over patch and I'm hoping it will last without it.

I'm now on my 3rd sensor in less than 2 weeks, I'm a fairly positive person normally but I'm losing my positivity and faith in this new Dexcom G7 sensor.

I feel like l'm a Beta Tester for it even though, I know that can't be the case as it's got EU authorisation for use here in Ireland.

I'm using a Dexcom Compatible phone Samsung A21 but it's running android version 12, it's recommended 10 or 11.

I've spoken with the Dexcom Tech Support today about my issues and they have said the fact that I'm using Android Version 12 shouldn't make any difference.

What I've been told today as well and was something I wasn't aware of, is that sitting down when putting a sensor on and pinching the skin will help, I normally stand up to do it.

I don't calibrate a lot if I can help it. They've said there shouldn't be a problem with calibrating the sensor, and if you need to calibrate a sensor 3 times or more, and readings are still 20% out, to call and they will replace it, it can take 15 minutes for a calibration to take effect is something to be aware of.

I'm a huge fan of Dexcom normally, and find it strange that in the 2 possibly 3 sensors I've used, there have been issues.

I'm going to give it the lifetime of this sensor so another 9 days and if I'm still having issues, I'm going to ask to go back to using Dexcom G6, as I need to be using a product that I trust, I have faith in and not experience so many issues and problems.

These are just my experiences of the G7, so everyone has to make their other decisions on whether they decide to change, if anyone asked me today about changing, I would say hang for a while before you move over to the G7

These are my personal findings, I'm sure there may be many using it who are not experiencing the same issues as I. I'm in no way being paid or asked to do this by Dexcom.

Is there anyone else using the G7 having these types of problems?

*Dawn Phenomenon* is something I had every morning until I started on the medtronic minimed 780G.

No matter what I did before bed, it made no difference, but now my insulin pump microbolus's when my blood glucose starts to rise during the day and night so I don't see the morning highs anymore.

The dawn phenomenon refers to a rise in blood sugar released by the liver. The release happens as the person's body is preparing to wake for the day...
