Interference...how we get in the way of our own communication.
I got to use French at work with a gentleman that expected to only speak English. Our conversation was rocky, but not because of a lack of proficiency. It was because of our expectations and interference from other languages.
The man kept saying random words in English because of his expectation of speaking English with me, which threw me off when trying to respond in French. It was an English conversation cue, but I knew French was the proper response.
Interference from other languages hindered me as well. I have a few words that no matter what language I am speaking, they work their way in.
For 'but' I prefer 'demo' (Japanese) for 'or' I default to 'ili' (Russian) I don't know why, but it happens Renoir for me to notice it.
In this case, any time I used the expression 'il y a' (French) and wanted to follow it with another option by using 'or', rather than French, Russian followed.
Has anyone noticed similar transfer or interference issues?

The linguistic genius of babies Patricia Kuhl shares astonishing findings about how babies learn one language over another -- by listening to the humans around them and "taking statistics" on the sounds they need to know. Clever lab experiments (and brain scans) show how 6-month-old babies use sophisticated reasoning to understand…
Umbrella, Paraguas, Parapluie, Regenschirm, 傘. I find this fascinating. In Spanish, French, German, and Japanese (as it relates to the kanji) the words for that thing we use to keep the rain off of us reference rain in the word. In English, however, we refer to shade. On top of that, we have a parasol. Just a word, but so much to think about.
Trying to get a few posts together on uncommon languages. If you or a friend speaks an uncommon language, message me, and we will come out and shoot a few short clips to share with the world.
