www.globalgroovelife.com got its start in Fair Trade when we started traveling in 1997 and purchased our first batch of Kashmiri Christmas tree ornaments. The Global Groove Life team, after more than 25 years working in Nepal, has had the good fortune and the warm welcome to experience Tihar-the festival of light, for the very first time ever! 🇳🇵
We are happy to share the festivities with you, especially with current world affairs: this holiday is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil; light over darkness. ✨🎇
Tihar main is celebrated on the night of the new moon in the 8th month of the Hindu calendar (the month of Kartik), which is considered to be the darkest night of the year.
Tihar lasts 5 days/nights here in Nepal and each day has its own specific, detailed rituals of special blessings. From the appreciation and blessings of dogs, crows, and cows, to the blessings of Goddess Laxmi, to the blessings of one’s brothers to the blessing of self, it is a week-long festival of dancing, singing, love, color and LIGHT!
When I say light, I do mean light!
At the entrance of each home or business a colorful mandala is carefully drawn with bright colored powders. Once the mandalas are completed, offerings of food, money and incense are placed in the center and the mandala is surrounded and accentuated with handmade clay-pot candlelight. 🕯
But that’s not the only light! The entire city is strewn with electric colored lights that honestly put the North American Xmas light scene to shame! We couldn’t believe how many and how quickly these lights went up all around the city! 🌆
The more light, the merrier and understandably so…..As one of the many Hindu stories surrounding the origin of this festival goes -we are lighting the way home for Sita, rescued from the evil Demon Ravana thru the efforts of the brave Monkey God, Hanuman and Lord Rama.
It’s certainly more than bright enough for Sita to find her way home today!
