Fight the winter bugs with the herbs and spices in your kitchen
During winter, when our bodies our exposed to prolonged periods of cold, as a protective measure to keep our vital organs, the brain and it's functions alive, our bodies will restrict the flow of blood to the extremities, in an effort to help conserve body heat for our vital organs and the brain. Unfortunately, this restriction also reduces the supply of white blood cells (which are the cells of our immune system), leaving us somewhat defenceless against bacteria and viral attack. A great way to offset this effect during the winter is to include fresh root ginger and cinnamon into your daily diet. E.g. adding ginger to your curry dish or a smoothie, sprinkling cinnamon on to your fruit salad, etc. The reason why this is beneficial is because ginger and cinnamon stimulates our blood circulation, thus having a warming effect on the body and halting the need for it to restrict the flow of blood.
Take care and enjoy the festivities people :0)
Natural home remedies for gastritis. While these remedies won't eliminate the condition, the will offer some degree of relief for any sufferers out there, so they are a good place to start (apart from the yogurt suggestion in my opinion. If you've been following me for a while, you'll know by now my views on dairy). I often find that peppermint tea works well for me but chamomile tea has zero effect! So experiment to see what works best for you. And remember, for the tea use two tea bags to maximise the effect.

Oops I did it again! So there I was, practising what I've been preaching, going to bed by 10:30pm latest, up at 5:30 to practise TaiJiQuan, all going well, well done Darren (self pat on my back!). Then the evenings start getting cooler (I'm sensitive to the cold) I start pushing myself hard again business wise, I start doing just a few late nights again, and then POW! Cold chills, fever, leaking nose, throbbing headache, and a BAD break out of coldsores to top it all off! Sounds like you? I really hope not, but if it does, the root of your problem may be your adrenal glands. They may decided to go on union strike without having the decency to let you know before hand! Didn't you get the memo?! Thus leading to a decline in energy and leaving you more open to bacterial/viral attacks. If it is adrenal fatigue, get to work supporting and nourishing them back to health asap, as it will take some time to get them working at an optimal level again. And one of the easiest things you can do to get the ball rolling…get plenty of rest!
Take care people :0)
Hi people! At Holmes Place Seepark on Sunday 13th Sept, they will be having an open day where I will be teaching a free 1 hour TaiJiQuan trial class at 10:45am, for those who would like to try. Then at Holmes Place Seepark from Tuesday 15th September (and every Tuesday thereafter), from 8-9am, I will be teaching TaiJiQuan classes.
Beginners are most definitely welcome so come and try, or share this with anyone who you think may be interested.
Take care people!

The Great Wall of China. That's kind of how you should be viewing your intestinal barrier where the absorption of your foods takes place, because it's equally as strong and impressive and it's integrity is dependent on the material used to construct it. The integrity of the intestinal barrier of our kids is especially important, and as parents, we are solely responsible for the outcome of that. Autism, ADHD/ADD, type 2 diabetes, asthma, etc, in children has increased with 21st century lifestyle, and digestive health not only plays a big part in the outcome of these conditions, it also plays a big part in the management and support of these conditions as well. This responsibility as parents actually begins before our kids even arrive into the world, as the health of the child is dependent on the health of the parents, and if we choose throughout our life time to consume junk (and by that I also mean mentally), then we choose to bath our cells, our DNA, in toxicity, and thus these are the building blocks of health or lack of, that we pass on to our children.
Take care people.
Little gremlins could possibly be hiding out in your cells!
So we're having a glorious summer, so be sure to distress and have fun, because if you've been unfortunate to have had a bacterial or viral infection such as Epstein-Barr or herpes virus (which remains in your body for the rest of your life, hibernating and laying dormant waiting to be activated) a stressed state, be it from continual work pressures, exams, home life, or internal bodily stressors, will depress your immune system and activate these gremlins, I mean viruses! Allowing them to replicate and colonise your cells. So please people, manage your stress as best you can and take care :0)
Protein for weight gain. Well what about protein for weight loss?
Of all the macronutrients, it is well recognised and understood that for those wanting to gain muscle mass, a diet that includes quality protein is required, as it provides the building material for muscle and other components of your body that includes, skin, blood, etc.
However, for those wanting to lose weight, a diet that also includes quality protein can also be of benefit, as eating protein leads to a greater feeling of fullness after a meal. Therefore, consuming protein with every meal, in addition to reducing your intake of carbohydrates and fats, can also help with weight loss. Take care people :0)
Okay, time to be transparent. So I just completed the first step of a what's called a 5 R program (Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Repair, Re-balance) to help resolve the imbalance of my gut bacteria and my chronic gut problems as a whole. And ooooh lord! The first 3 - 5 days were a killer! As during the course of this program you have to seriously reduce, and in some areas, eliminate your carbohydrate intake, which includes sugar, and all sources of it, which means cravings!! Reason being is that sugar feeds the pathogenic organisms in the gut. So, I'm not one to dabble with refined sugar in all it's forms and disguises, but hey, I'm only human, I like my dried fruits (organic so as to avoid sulphur dioxide), and my fruits. But while on the first step of this program around 80% of the fruits I'm accustomed to eating I couldn't eat, ALL dried fruits had to go :0( And even my beloved sweet potatoes I had to seriously reduce :0( For those on this program, who have often struggled to lose weight, the benefit for you is that you will see weight start to drop off as you reduce/eliminate your refined carbohydrate intake, and as a result, regulate your insulin levels. Helpful, huh?! :0) For me however, no! I have an extremely high metabolism, so I struggle to keep on the weight that I have, even though I consume ridiculously big meals! Those that know me well can vouch for this ;0) But hey, I'm feeling really good so I can't complain :0) Take care people :0)
Did you know that every day your human cells (of which there are about 60 trillion) are subjected to 1,000 to 10,000 potentially cancer-causing attacks? With that being said, let me just summarise how truly magnificent you really are! So, every day attacks upon your DNA your body is able to repair most of the damage. If a defective cell still exists, there is a system within your healthy cell colony tells the cancer cell to revert back to normal functioning. If the defective cell with damaged DNA still grows, your body tells the cancer cell to commit su***de. If it doesn't, your body stops making blood vessels to the tumour, if it still continues to grow, your body proceeds to wall off the cancer cells with a tough envelope made of collagen and calcium. All of these cancer halting mechanisms are fed by the nutrients in your diet. Take care of your bodies people, god knows every day it's fighting to take care of you :0)
All foods will do one of two things in our bodies, cause/increase inflammation or reduce/stop inflammation, which either means tissue damage or tissue damage control. For example, the foods I've eaten over the last couple of days has caused a rise of inflammation in my body, as I partially got caught out while on a trip. I say partially because some of it was down to my choosing! Due to the state of constant, chronic inflammation my gut is in, at this moment in time, I avoid grains and definitely never ever ever ever consume dairy or gluten! However, I had some rice (yeah, I know! I thought a little rice can't hurt! That will teach me!) with fish from a restaurant, and unbeknown to me, they added butter to the rice! The result, slight gut pain, very itchy ears and throat, and a leaky nose. Nice!
So for those with chronic inflammation like myself, and to those in general, just be a little bit more mindful when you're out and about. And as always, take care and enjoy the sun people :0)
It's hot hot hot! And what goes best with this blazing hot weather? A glass of Pimms with a slice of lemon? A nice cold beer? No! We need an ARFVCO! Which stands for Abdominal Revolution From Virgin Coconut Oil Organic! Okay, so what do I mean by that. Well, if you've been caught off-guard and you're still in the process of losing some belly fat to get to that 6 pack (I have 8, but we won't go there) the number one fat you should be consuming is Virgin Coconut Oil Organic. Why? Because VCO is a Medium Chain Fatty Acid that doesn't enter the cholesterol cycle and isn't stored as fat, unlike other Long Chain Fatty Acids. Making it easy for you to lose that belly fat. Yes!
As always, take care and enjoy the glorious weather people :0)
Why do all the sweet and unhealthy foods I crave have to taste so good?!
This and the question "what is the meaning of life?", our great philosophers have pondered over and thought deeply about through the ages! However, the first question I can help you out with, in a word sugar! Your red bloods cells and neurons (the main components of your central nervous system) rely on sugar (or referred to as blood glucose when transported through blood) as their primary fuel. So our bodies have a big need for it, hence the reason why we crave it as much as we do. Obviously the food industry was quick to pick up on this fact, and cash in on it, which is why you'll find many foods containing sugar. Take care people :0)
Professor Loren Cordain identifies the links between modern diets and disease.
This is a very interesting video from Professor Loren Cordain who has been researching the links between modern diets and disease for over two decades. Back in my chocolate gateau eating days I would have been like, pprrr, whatever! The first couple of minutes are a little bit technical, but stick with, as he provides a simple, clear explanation.
Naturally it gets a thumbs up from me! But I'd be interested to hear what you think? Who's for it? Who's against it?
Enjoy people :0)

"I'm getting old, I feel tired all the time" in addition to "I haven't got the energy like I used to when I was young" are the common stock phrases I hear all the time. You heard your parents say it, you hear your TV say it, and especially those with children, and I understand that, trust me I do! However, apart from those with underlying conditions, that has a direct impact on the bodies ability to produce energy, your tiredness has NOTHING to do with your age and has everything do with good servicing of your body! Like we regularly check and service our cars, the same is required of our bodies. But regretfully, we actually take better care of our cars than we do ourselves :0( You can't expect the same energy out put you had in your early twenties, going into your early thirties and beyond, if you are not taking the time to check, service, and maintain, the inner workings of your body (which also includes the mind, but that's another blog). A good detox program, for example, even just once a year, would help. Such a program that would incorporate the ingestion of nutrient dense, liquid foods, over a certain period of time would require minimal digestion, and thus allow the body to focus on repair and help flush toxins out. Foods and the effects on our genes
For those that know me well, you know I like my food, and lots of it! Now, unlike before 2005 when I was typically eating whatever I desired and expelling large amounts of mucus from my body as a result!, I now tend to eat more foods that work with my body rather than against it. Why? Because foods have the ability to turn the genes in our body on and off. Cocoa, for example, reduces inflammation by turning on genes that reduce inflammation.
Now considering chronic inflammation is implicated as the cause of many of todays diseases (crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, hashimoto's thyroiditis, etc), you can do lot a to influence good health outcomes in your bodies by choosing to eat more foods that are nutrient dense and anti-inflammatory in nature, and thus turn on the genes in your body that will produce positive health outcomes.

Cortisone. Used in conventional medicine, in my opinion, waaay too much. Most recent case I heard was of a 10 year old boy who recently developed an allergic reaction to pollen and thus was given cortisone to treat it. Okay, I understand, such as in the case of an allergy or an autoimmune disease, they are an overreactive immune response, and cortisone (a corticosteroid) suppresses the immune system, job well done! Not sure about that, as now you have a suppressed immune system that can no longer protect you against threats, and you haven't actually addressed the real issue/question at all. What has caused the immune system to overreact? When you start investigating the answer to this question you will find that all roads lead to the healing of the gut. Take care people :0)
