Of everything I've ever done for voice, I believe this piece is the most powerful. Re-set from an ambling 6/8 meter into 4/4, the music begins as a tender prayer and ends as a soaring march. To me it really fits the varied content of Orson Pratt Huish's wonderful text. Scored for SATB choir and piano, a soloist can be used for the opening and closing phrases.

I don't have a recording of this arrangement in piano/SATB form, but a solo/orchestra version was recorded several years ago by Jordan Bluth, Kayson Brown, and the Lyceum Philharmonic Orchestra at American Heritage School, a recording that is available on iTunes (https://music.apple.com/us/album/come-unto-jesus/1482922300?i=1482922308) and other platforms as well. The orchestral accompaniment is a direct expansion of the piano accompaniment in this version.

The piano accompaniment becomes very full for the last verse, so a minimum of eight voices are suggested with larger choirs being more effective. The piece begins in A-flat and ends in A-major. The choral parts are not overly difficult; the piano accompaniment is more demanding. Tempo should be martial for the final verse, around 116-120 to the quarter note.

Brass players get to make some amazing sounds, and there's something about those sounds that make them musical heralds. High on the Mountain Top was my grandfather's favorite hymn, and he loved the brightness of this arrangement. It doesn't have real brass in it, but bright-as-brass E-major harmonies use the whole keyboard to fill a room with sound.

Grandpa asked that I play this at his funeral, which made me feel a little sheepish because there's nothing even remotely funereal about the piece. But when Elder Hafen (who served as one of Grandpa's counselors in a student ward bishopric) spoke at the funeral and described Grandpa as a "mixture of Joseph Fielding Smith and John Wayne," music this emphatic didn't seem out of place at all.

This 4:00 minute arrangement is meant to depict a person reflecting on their life and their walk with the Lord throughout it. Passages take the listener through experiences of prayer and strength, solitude and reflection, hesitation and confidence, exultation and resignation. This arrangement is appropriate for worship services, funerals, and other contemplative occasions; it also may be a personal addition to a recital. When practicing, work for a lyric legato in the upper right hand and a sensitive, lush, and rippling accompaniment shared between the left and lower right hands. Music begins in E-flat major and changes to D-flat major.
