I remember the first time I was faced with the reality that I would be using a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
I was in my hospital bed, recovering from the seemingly endless surgeries. The doctors coming in and out became a blur. I answered questions. Let them do whatever they wanted to me. I was in so much pain I couldn’t even think.
Then he came in. The man in the wheelchair... I immediately became viscerally angry. Furious. I yelled “GET OUT! I DON’T WANNA TO TALK TO YOU!”.
There where a lot of unknowns about my injury at that time. How bad it was, how much I could recover, was I fully paralyzed?! Would I be able to walk again?! Seeing the man in the wheelchair gave me all the answers I needed... Deep down I knew that was going to be me... but I was in denial.
You see, I was a 20 year old college kid who worked two jobs. I went to the gym every day. Played pickup sports at the park. Went running all the time. The entirety of my life I used my legs. The idea of them being gone forever was not something I wanted to even think about.
I told myself I’d be recovered and back to 100% In no time. Anytime a wheelchair was mentioned I’d blow it off. I didn’t want a wheelchair. Nope not me. I’m not as bad as you all say I am. I’m going to beat this fast.
That couldn’t have been farther from the truth. I heavily relied and still rely on my wheelchair to get around. For a long time I resented my wheelchair and all the challenges that came with it’s use. It effected every aspect of my life. Always getting in the way of what I wanted to do. Making me feel like an outcast, a freak.
But here’s the truth...
Without my wheelchair I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere or do anything. My wheelchair has given me independence. My wheelchair has given me freedom. My wheelchair has given me life.
Without my wheelchair I wouldn’t be able to be me.
