The #1 album in the States on this date in 1966 was "The Monkees" by The Monkees. The album had been on the charts for 13 weeks and had, at that point, been the #1 album on the Billboard Top 200 for 8 straight weeks. The album would remain atop the chart for a total of 13 straight weeks, at which point the album was bumped to the #2 position with the release of "More of the Monkees" in January of 1967.
