It's International Clinical Trials Day!

A clinical trial is a research study where volunteers participate to help answer specific health questions. These trials test the safety and effectiveness of new or existing treatments, interventions, or devices. They play a crucial role in advancing medical knowledge and improving health outcomes.

International Clinical Trial Day is held on 20th May each year to commemorate the day that James Lind, a naval surgeon, famously conducted the first controlled clinical trial in 1747.
He began this clinical trial in order to find a remedy for a group of sailors suffering from similar symptoms of scurvy. He divided the 12 sick sailors into six pairs. Then gave each a different dietary supplement, suggested by previous writers, such as cider, vinegar, seawater, sulfuric acid, oranges, and lemons. His trial showed that oranges and lemons were dramatically better than other supposed treatments for scurvy.

Since then, clinical trials have come a long way and are the main contributors to making effective medicines and treatments as well as improving medical knowledge and healthcare.
This International Clinical Trials Day, take a moment to honour clinical research professionals by recognising their contributions to public health and medicine.
