To promote and develop the teaching and learning of chemistry, both academic and work-based, to 11-19+ year olds in secondary schools and colleges.
The Secondary and Further Education Group - previously known as the Curriculum and Assessment Group - is one of the RSC's many Interest Groups. The Interest Groups are member driven groups which exist to benefit RSC members, and the wider chemical science community, in line with the RSC's strategy and charter. Committee:

was a Chemistry teacher for over 40 years. I studied Chemistry at Bangor University before working overseas. For the first 6 years I worked overseas in Uganda, Tanzania and Lesotho finishing off with 12 years in Papua New Guinea as a teacher, headmaster and curriculum advisor. Back in the UK I worked at Leek High School and Newcastle Under Lyme school. I was a professional mentor for Keele (Science and Psychology) and for MMU (Science). Whilst at Leek we ran a very successful Millennium Group with Staffordshire WI running 2 science conferences for 3 years. I am an active member of the RSC and have contributed to N. Staffs local section at all levels, was Chair of the Midlands regional group and sat on the national Networks committee for 4 years. I was a Gatsby fellow and am a member of Miranda Net. Jessica Ball studied for her Chemistry degree at Queen Mary College, London. Following brief periods as a laboratory technician in R&D at the MOD and ICI Paints Division, she took a career break, then worked part-time for several years as a school laboratory technician covering the 11-18 age group. From 1995, she worked as a chemist for a waste management company where she gained practical experience in the management of hazardous wastes. She provided scientific and technical support on hazardous waste management, assisted at emergency incidents and carried out environmental monitoring. In 2001, she joined the RSC and gained chartered status. From 2002, she became self-employed to work as a vocational assessor and trainer, achieving chartered waste manager (MCIWM) and her assessor qualifications. She has worked in this role for the past 15 years, assessing vocational qualifications in a wide range of industries and workplaces. She has been involved in the development of the vocational occupational standards for the waste management industry as well as writing course materials and providing training. Jessica joined the SaFe group to help raise awareness of the range of vocational pathways available to students, including apprenticeships, through networking and the very successful national conferences. My career has been a fusion of applied organic synthesis and the creation of industry-education partnerships in the pharmaceutical industry. I developed a series of flagship initiatives aligned with the education curriculum for students aged 9-18 which have inspired a future generation of young scientists. I also founded a successful Science Apprenticeship Scheme at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Horsham, which was regarded as an industry model for Higher Apprentices. I am an Ordinary member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Council and former member of the Science, Education and Industry Board. I also an ex officio member of both the Secondary and Further Education group and the Downland Local Section. I was recognised with the Inspiration and Industry Award in 2009, received the Award for Service for creativity and passion in promoting chemistry in 2013 and was honoured with the British Empire Medal for service to the chemical sciences in the 2016 Queen’s birthday honours list. I am now semi-retired and invest my energy in promoting chemistry at both public and education outreach events. I am also involved in promoting apprenticeships to both students and employers through my network and am an assessor for professional registration at RSciTech, RSci, CSci and CChem. Former Senior Teacher at Handsworth Grammar School (Birmingham) with responsibility for Staff Professional Development Performance Management, NQT Induction and the Titan SCITT Programmes, previously Head of Chemistry and Coordinator of Science. For several years was an Associate Tutor for PGCE Chemistry students in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham, and was also the Villiers Park Educational Trust’s West Midlands Coordinator for Mathematics and Science. Member of the RSC Education Division Secondary & Further Education Group Committee (and its forerunners, the Assessment Group and Curriculum & Assessment Group in various roles including Secretary and Treasurer). Vice-Chairman of the RSC Education Division Midland Region until the English Regions were dissolved in 2016. At one time was an RSC Birmingham & West Midlands Region Section Committee member. Examiner and Area Moderator over the years with several examination boards at various levels in Chemistry and Science; former Chief Examiner for GCSE Chemistry. Currently a GCSE Team Leader and an Advanced Level examiner in Chemistry. Secretary of the West Midlands Chemistry Teachers’ Centre, based at the University of Birmingham, and a member of the Association for Science Education West Midlands Region Committee. David is a Chemistry teacher at Aldenham School, Elstree, with a particular interest in making practical work more effective as learning activities, and in teacher support and development. He has worked with OCR and CLEAPSS to increase the amount of microscale practical activities used for teaching GCSE Chemistry, and writes a personal blog on a variety of aspects of teaching and learning. David has previously worked as Head of Chemistry and Science in schools in North Hertfordshire, and two years as a Chemistry Subject Advisor at the UK exam board OCR. Related Links

Samantha Turner has been a secondary school Chemistry Teacher since 2002. She undertook an Applied Chemistry degree at Nottingham Trent University, including a year in industry at a large oil formulation company in Derbyshire. She followed this up with a PGCE from the University of Nottingham and is currently working at one of the highest achieving state schools in the East Midlands as Key Stage 3 Science Coordinator having previously been Head of Chemistry and BTEC Coordinator. Samantha achieved Chartered Science teacher status in 2015 due to the extra work she does in her department and outside of school, including links with University of Nottingham Chemistry Department. Samantha joined the Secondary and Further Education (SaFE) group of the RSC in 2015 after their first Chemistry Teacher conference and has helped to organise the 2nd and subsequent conferences.
