Merry Xmas to all of my FB friends.
It has been a torrid year. Beyond international conflict and domestic absurdities, I lost a couple of very close friends. Particularly sorry at the passing of Miracle Mile’s drummer Trevor Smith. Trev played on the first 3 albums and also featured in the live line up that stuck its chin out in the late 90s. He was the band’s pup: a magnificent musician and an even better band mate. We had a splendid time together. Trev will forever be the clatter in my rock n roll dreams.
It was great to see the bassist from that lineup Les Nemes reform Haircut 100 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ‘Pelican West’. There was a UK tour and, I believe the boys will be taking on the rest of the world in 2024. There’s even talk of new recordings. Speaking of which, Marcus Cliffe and I finished our latest Miracle Mile album. ‘East of Ely’ is our first MM album since 2012. The project started on the Suffolk and Norfolk coast and was fine tuned at Marcus’s Norbury Brook Studios in South London. We are both thrilled with the results and look for forward to the sharing. More of that later. A big thank you to all involved: Melvin Duffy returned with his weeping pedal steel, Mike Pickering added prodding and perfectly placed drums and the lovely Lucinda Drayton chirped in with some crystalline vocals. Peter Beckmann worked his usual wonders in Mastering the album. The awesome Barry Cross is currently beavering away with the artwork which will grace both CD and vinyl. And a big thank you to Ian Smith for welcoming us to the Last Night From Glasgow label who’ll be helping us to work the album. Big love to Marcus; I wouldn’t be me without you!
Too many words as usual. I wish you all the best for the season and 2024. Internationally and domestically it’s been a year of horrors. Let’s hope for ceasefire and some kind of authentic humanitarian care in the Ukraine and Gaza.
See you all in 2024. The bar is officially open. I’m off to mix myself a Negroni!

East of Ely: 6: Light Enough 01/12/2023

This seems prescient.
December 1st. A year ago today was the final full day of a 3 week stay in Walberswick. It was the morning that I took the photograph that is featured on the cover of the forthcoming Miracle Mile album ‘East of Ely’.
It’s reassuring to know that, year by year, the place holds the same attraction. In such transient times it’s good to have access to such a sturdy touchstone.
This place. Now a part of my body clock; my migration. I’ve been revisiting for ten years and it has gently hooked itself onto my heart. What does that mean? I guess it means that there’s always next year and that it’s not too late. That’s as vague and invigorating as it sounds. It’s a half light of hope. And that is light enough.

East of Ely: 5: Songs and Serendipity 22/11/2023

I thought I'd tell you about the genesis of the songs on the album. That title? 'East of Ely' refers to the sense of a border. As I drive east towards Walberswick (M25/A12) I'm always aware of a fault-line, one that separates where I'm coming from, and where I'm going to. This boundary has become more pronounced since Marcus invested in his bolthole in North Norfolk. Our boltholes share the same border.

East of Ely: 4: Cover Story 21/11/2023

An album's cover is important: effectively it's an acceptance of the project's billboard. It is fashioned as the timeless trousers you'll be sporting for years to come. It needs to reflect content; even if it is somehow counter to that content. Like a decent book jacket, it should encourage the idle viewer's eye to settle, linger and somehow consider 'That's for me!' But when you're wearing someone else's trousers, you have to trust their sense of fashion.

East of Ely: 2: Boltholes 17/11/2023

Boltholes. Mine lies at the end of a road that leads only there: a fisherman’s netting shed on the Suffolk coast, couched between river and sea. There’s a wood burner, a kettle, a bed. It’s November. I’m obliged to do nothing.

East of Ely: 1: Why? Why Not? 14/11/2023

With Miracle Mile's forthcoming album in the offing, I've decided to revive my 'Hissyfit' Blog. I'll be offering up ramblings related to the release. In lieu of an active website, it'll be my way of keeping those interested up to speed. The essence of creativity is self-indulgence. If I can't burn my own torch and make myself the hero of my own story then, what's the point in the reaching?
Self-indulgence or self-preservation? I hope you'll give yourself the chance to decide.

East of Ely: 1: Why? Why Not? 'Maybe the West's approach is right. After all, if you've got a massive fight in, say, a pub car park, the best way of solving it is clearly...

Photos from Trevor Jones Miracle Mile's post 13/11/2023

This morning Di feels it imperative that I share with you the very chair that is opposite the very chair I was sitting whilst writing most of the lyrics for Miracle Mile’s forthcoming album ‘East of Ely’. Bedheaded and hungover, I’m wishing someone would tone the light down a notch!

Miracle Mile - Breaking Down The Barriers (1986) 08/11/2023

This is a blast from the past.
Miracle Mile’s first album was ‘Bicycle Thieves’ in 1997. This song was recorded a decade earlier in 1986. Miracle Mile were a trio then. The singer in those days was Steve Smith. Our drummer was Phil Sands. I was a floundering, ten thumbed guitarist. Phil and Steve soon departed to form the excellent ‘Molly and the Moonbeams’. We made this recording just before their departure. It’s the first recording to feature Phil Smith (ex Haircut 100) on sax. Phil later joined the band full time alongside another Haircut member, Les Nemes on bass. I became the singer and Steve Davis joined as guitarist and producer. Mark Hornby joined later on guitar and we worked our way towards that debut album in 97.
Thanks to Carlos Luque Sinisterra for reminding me of this. It still holds a spirited charm.

As we prepare for the release of Miracle Mile’s new album ‘East of Ely’, perhaps now is a good time to remind you of our last release.
‘In Cassidy’s Care’ was released to very kindly reviews back in 2013. It’s available from BandCamp, as are all other Miracle Mile and Jones albums.
