There are times when we can feel ‘chewed up and spit out’ by life, possibly never understanding the reasons why. We can feel discarded as if we don’t matter – maybe we were dismissed from a job we needed or took great pride in, someone we counted as a friend decided to no longer associate with us, or it could have been the end of a relationship we greatly cherished.

Looking closely at this photo, it appears the bush has been cut up, kicked, and left to provide for itself. Those walking by it each day probably pay little mind to it, if at all. When I walked past this little plant a few years back, I was struck at how it appeared to be thriving despite the harsh treatment given it.

I walked on by it as many had before me but the more steps, I took away from it, the more it was on my mind. I felt God saying to me, ‘at times this has been you. Remember the new growth that is occurring; I may prune you, but it is never without a purpose. New growth occurs faster when I remove things from you.’

I know none of us are unique in our experiences in life. We may feel that no one can understand what we are going through….; but the more we talk to others, the more we realize the similarities in all our lives.

Thinking of the symbolism in the plant had me doubling back to take this photo and I’m glad I did. It’s a regular reminder to me of God’s provision even if I don’t understand the ‘why’ of it all.

May each of you that are feeling alone or wondering where God is in your life take comfort in knowing “…weeping may stay for the night but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5) and “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
